My husband booked a surfing lesson and it was never written in the book. Luckily he stopped in the Eternal Waves the day before to ask a few questions and they said he did not have a lesson scheduled. Luckily this was not peak season and his time slot for the next morning was still available. Also not once did anyone at the surf shop either visit suggest wearing a rash guard shirt or any type of shirt. While this may seem common place to a surfer, this may not be commonplace to a first time individual taking a lesson. So morning of the lesson we arrived and had no issue meeting up with the instructor as discussed. My husband did say the instructor was very quiet and did not really relay much instruction on how to get a feel for the board. So my husband ended up renting the board for 24 hours. However, he ended up with a rash so bad that he could not use the board for very long. I suggest sending out a more talkative, informative and a person who truly understands how to teach. Some people will now all about a subject but not be able to articulate the ins and outs and do not make good instructors. So for this reason we rated the lesson as a 3.

Outstanding overall experience. Great locally owned and operated surf shop! My daughter (16) and I booked two separate surfing sessions on two separate days. Both of our instructors were knowledgeable and experienced surfers. In fact, one of the instructors was the owner of the surf shop. The lessons went so well that we were both surfing buy the end of the first lesson. We had a great time. If you want to have fun and learn to surf, I highly recommend this shop.

If I were rating the office staff, the score would be five, they were very personable and helpful when we stopped by to pay, but sadly that is not the case. My wife and I are very active and frequently take lessons either to improve our skills in a given sport or to acquire the skills of a new one, so we’re very accustomed to the process. When one thinks of an instructor, attributes like, personable, experienced, responsible, highly skilled and with the maturity and communication skills to impart their knowledge to the student effectively are some that come to mind. I can’t speak to our “instructors” experience, but other than that, the boy of about 16 that Eternal Wave sent as it’s representative had none of these attributes. He arrived late, left early, did not introduce himself nor ask our names (we have no idea what his name was), did not help to carry the equipment, gave only the most basic instruction and left (61 minutes after he first appeared, to unload the first board) without so much as a goodbye or thank you. The value for money was zero. He was not outright unpleasant, he was just totally indifferent. He acted like he had drawn the short straw and had to be there so his body was there but that was all, just going through the motions. We raised two sons and had never seen such rude behavior from them or their friends. It was truly remarkable that Eternal Wave would send someone so totally without the skill set of an instructor. He presumably is a good surfer but that was not what he was there for. The following are the details of what happened: We arrived 20 minutes early for our 10:00 lesson and called the office at 9:50 when there was no sign of anyone from Eternal Wave. I was told that the instructor was on his way. I think they said that he had left the office at 9:10 for the 3 mile drive, but surely not. We waited along the path at Magnolia as instructed and at 10:05 a boy of about 16 walked past us carrying a surf board. We thought nothing of it as he didn’t say a word to us, despite our being the only couple around and one would think he was aware that he would be teaching a couple. When he went back to the vehicle and returned with a second board my wife asked if he was with Eternal Wave he said yes and that was all. No greeting, no introduction. We followed him, quite confused. After setting the second board down, he led us onto the sand and showed us how to pop-up from the board, how to position our hands and feet and in generally how to paddle and that was it pretty much it. He then told us to grab the boards and follow him up the beach about a hundred yards and he set off. My 5’3” wife and I managed just fine with our belongings in one hand and our board in the other following about 20 feet behind the empty handed boy His teaching method was to stand shoulder deep in the water and push our board ahead of the approaching wave while we paddled. This was probably how his father taught him which would be great if there was one student and that student was already very comfortable being on the board and they had all day to do it, neither of which was the case, and he knew that. We were to take turns letting him push us, so one of was always to be idle and the other waiting for him to choose the wave. Very quickly that inefficient use of our one hour became evident, so I chose to work on my own and to ask questions should any arise. My wife stayed with the boy and said that he gave her no significant other instruction while pushing her and because she spent all of her time facing the shore waiting for his push, she gained no ability to read the swells. After about forty minutes, he announced that this was the last wave. When we went in, he went off to call the office about picking up the boards. My wife met him on his way back and confirmed the pick-up time and he was off. Fortunately, we kept the boards for two more hours and unsolicited direction from neighboring surfers proved much more helpful than anything the “instructor” said. Our neighbors showed us how best to cup our hands and where to put our feet while paddling. Also, how to read the swell and anticipate the wave. Although it was rather too late, they also said that at the beginning of our lesson we should have ridden the board several times on our knees before trying to stand up, so we would be comfortable with the feel of the board. It all makes sense, but none of that came from the boy.

Response from EternalWaveSurfShop, Owner at Eternal Wave Surf Shop

Colin, I apologize that your experience with us was not anything like you expected. That is very disappointing to read your review on Austin. I wish we could have handled this asap to better your experience with Eternal Wave. With Austin being the type young man he is, he would be disappointed in himself for not allowing your surf lessons to be the highlight of your trip. This is something we have addressed with him in light of your review, thank you for the review good or bad. Next time you come down I will personally give you and your wife a free private surf lesson. Thank you Jacob -Owner

This locally owned surf shop has a great selection of items. Surf boards, kayaks and beach cruiser bikes can be rented by the day or by the week. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The owner and his staff provide surf lessons with groups or individuals and are very accommodating when scheduling lessons. I highly recommend this business.
