About
Located in the heart of downtown, TJC Gallery showcases rotating exhibitions curated entirely from the holdings of the Johnson Collection, a private collection of Southern art based in Spartanburg. The Johnson Collection counts iconic masterworks among its holdings, as well as representative pieces by an astonishing depth and breadth of artists, native and visiting, whose lives and legacies form the foundation of Southern art history. Hailed by "The Magazine Antiques" as having staged a "quiet art historical revolution" and expanding "the meaning of regional," the Johnson Collection heralds the pivotal role that art of the South plays in the national narrative. Individual works are loaned to partner institutions worldwide, and traveling exhibitions tour the United States with a combined annual attendance of over 1.7 million visitors. In 2016, the state of South Carolina honored the Johnson Collection with the Governor’s Award for the Arts, its highest arts distinction.

Small private gallery/museum showing special exhibits to the public. Check program for current exhibits. Very nice but small exhibits spaces.

This was my first visit to the Johnson Gallery on Main Street. It is a private collection of art. I heard in the local media there was an exhibit by a SC artist-Leo Twiggs entitiled "Requiem for Mother Emanuel". I live about 40 minutes away but this gallery was well worth the drive. We learned several details from the curator on duty. The paintings are on batik. The artist says the exhibit 'captures humanity in the midst of horror.'
Highly recommend. Exhibit closes in early October. Only open Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 1-5 pm.
Site would not let me upload a photo. Go see it for yourself.
