Eric is a knowledgeable and friendly guide. We’ve been visiting Charleston since the 1980’s but Eric told us stories about the city that we never heard before. I highly recommend a tour with Eric.

Al was a fabulous and informative guide. He has a wealth of knowledge of the city having been born and raised there himself. We had a firsthand look of this charming city and all the details of its historic past including the Battery, established churches and their significance, old mansions, the market place, city squares and overall background of Charleston. He was a delight to hang out with and a fun guide.

Alfred turned up 10 minutes early, just like our small group so we got started with some fun but relevant banter about the origins of Charleston. And then it continued with a lively repartée for the next two hours to piece together the history and all sorts of anecdotes. This while studying the architecture of what turns out to be so-called accidental tourism of any of this is still standing and has been rebuilt from time to time. Our guide really helped make it come alive, but I suggest to anyone on the tour to get the most out of it Do some studying on your own. become “dangerously familiar“ with your surroundings before just going on tour. You will get a hell of a lot more out of it. My suggestion is going to the Nathaniel Russell house as one of your first stops to go on one of their one hour guided tours first. start to pick up some of the history and complications over time. it really helped me get ready for Alfred’s wealth of knowledge and an doubts, it helped the other tourist as well since they were not as prepared. The Charleston Brogue as he termed it —was delightful. Such a worthwhile use of time to help the city and its past come alive.
Yes, slavery played more than a prominent role in the city and one needs to understand and make peace with this period in history. It really helped me to understand better their lives during this time of rampant disease and plagues before mechanical planters and harvesters, and everything else in the stifling heat and humidity is a shock to anyone’s system. Yes with the chilled water in my hand, nevertheless.
Fascinating city.

I booked online about a month ago for a 2:30 tour today. The website offered two time slots, 10 am or 2:30 pm. I purposely picked the 2:30 tour because it was our first time in Charleston, we don’t know the city, and didn’t want to fumble our way there during Monday morning rush hour. I wanted to have a good time buffer to find parking and get our bearings. At 10 am this morning (morning of my scheduled tour) I received a phone call from the tour company asking why we weren’t there as we were scheduled for 10 am. I advised that no, in fact, I scheduled for 2:30 pm. I had the email confirmation printed out sitting right in front of me. The caller sounded a tad confused but didn’t argue with me and just said “uhhh...ok then”. I figured just a mistake since I had the booking confirmation, all should be good. We got to town about an hour early and were hanging out in the park across the street from the meeting place when I received another call at about 1:15 pm, again stating they had me down for 10 am. I again said no, I booked for 2:30. I was told they had no one available for 2:30 and on their end it clearly said I was set for 10 am, despite the email confirmation I was looking at that said 2:30, and despite the phone call earlier where I wasn’t met with any argument after saying nope, 2:30. They offered to refund or reschedule for the next day at 10 am (so is the 2:30 pm tour not even an option? It wasn’t offered, but it’s clearly a time slot on the website). I already had another tour for Ft Sumter booked the following morning so that wasn’t an option for me. They did agree to refund my ticket purchase.
I looked at several different tour group options and picked this company specifically because of the great reviews and how knowledgeable the guide was. It was a real bummer because having never been here before, I was really looking forward to a waking history tour with someone who had some in-depth knowledge of the area.
I ended up buying a walking tour book from the gift shop on Meeting Street which was easy to follow, fortunately, but only gave tiny blurbs about each location it highlighted and I felt like I had to pay more attention to the book to stay on track than appreciate what I was looking at. We ended up passing by other walking tours in progress I know I missed out on a lot of cool information and history.
I’m sure this is a great tour and a really knowledgeable guide and I’m really bummed I didnt get to experience it. Again I get glitches happen and I’m not looking to sound like a whiner, but I know I didnt make a mistake here. I would suggest you call to book instead of going through the website or call to confirm your booking so you aren’t stuck clueless like I was.
We still had a good time.

I am so sorry about this mix-up. I'm still not sure why we had you listed at 10 a.m. in our booking system, which has proven consistently reliable. If you contact us I will be glad to send you a gift certificate for two that will be good for a future tour for yourself or use it as a gift for friends.

We did the tour with Eric and were very impressed with his background and knowledge in history. He was very friendly and eager to answer all our questions. The experience was comparable with that of a true museum, with very knowledgeable remarks which really helped to understand and discover the history of Charleston. If you're looking for true history, Eric is the guide to go. Plus he is a professor at The Citadel, which shows you how professional the tour is and how accurate is the information. Not only did we learn about the conventional history of Charleston, we also learned about those hidden gems of history which nobody knows, like when George Washington was hit by the window of the house he was staying in and also about some Hollywood movie spots. And for the cherry on top, we were greeted by dolphins at the end of the tour in the Battery.
Hands down one of the best guided tours we've had and would totally recommended to anyone who would like to make their visit to Charleston worthwhile.

This tour was fun, informative, and a great way to see the city! Eric was VERY qualified and personable. He did a great job of providing a fantastic experience, and was able to answer any questions our inquisitive group threw at him. This tour was a lovely way to experience this beautiful city, and provided so much interesting information about its rich history.

We took the footprints walking tour with Al. Based on the photos in these reviews, I think this tour is a little different each time. We covered a lot of ground that you couldn't with a carriage tour (through graveyards, through gardens and down alleys). He asked about our interests in the beginning (we were a small group on a Monday), and I think he targeted his topics for our interests while adding in a lot of other things along the way. The tour was very interesting, he answered lots of questions, and we all had a great experience. I would recommend it. (2 couples and a kid in a stroller- they do have kid rates too, which I had to call to find out).

Our group thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Our guide Al was extremely knowledgeable and did a good job covering a wide variety of topics including architecture, economy, politics and history. He also clearly enjoys his job and kept things light and humorous. Would definitely recommend.

With so many Charleston tours available, why book with Charleston Old Walled City? Because it’s the best!! We’ve traveled the globe, taking various types of tours, and Al Ray was the best tour guide we’ve ever encountered. He is knowledgeable, articulate, and personable. As a native Charlestonian and avid historian, Al captivated us for three hours on the Architectural and Gardens Tour. He enjoys sharing about his changing city as shown by his fascinating stories of the cemeteries, buildings, iron work, and plants. We’re so glad we chose Al’s tour while visiting this jewel of the South.

Al was awesome! Very knowledgeable and and made the tour not only educational but fun! Lots of tidbits I think you wouldn’t get to hear on a carriage tour. Plus you can social distance walking, where I didn’t see any of that on the carriages roaming around the city. This is a must if you really want to get some info about Charleston.
