A piece of Tuscan heaven
Sep 2015 • Friends
My friends and I visited Guilio and his family at Castel Ruggero for the day while we were doing some travelling around Europe. For lunch, we had homemade pasta with freshly made sauce, along with gorgeous Italian meats, freshly made dips and bread. We had a wine tasting after lunch; the wines were so good we each bought a case, even though they were difficult to carry while we still travelled. It was definitely worth the hassle! The villa itself is breathtaking, as are the grounds. The whole estate looks like it belongs in a movie! We got a tour of the gardens as well and learnt about the different varieties of tomatoes that they use for their sauce. I highly recommend a visit to Castel Ruggero, it was one of the best days I had in Europe. Guilio and his family are very welcoming, all speak excellent English and have the best Chianti in the region. 10/10.

Heaven and a glass of wine

I was invited to stay at Castel Ruggero on my first visit to Italy.
The landscape and views are as spectacular as the d' Afflitto family are welcoming and friendly.

The castle is unbelievable. In the morning I walked the gardens with Gaetano who introduced me to their own variety of nearly 400 hundred kinds of tomato. Never in my life have had an experience like this and it is one I will never forget.

The wine produced on the castle grounds is rich and full flavor. I was lucky to be treated to lunch with the host who prepared home made hand rolled pasta seasoned with tomatoes picked from the garden. In the evening we sat and counted the constellations and shooting starts. The sky is was pitch black and clear enough to look deep into the milky way.

I will definitely be returning to visit and if you are in or near Florence it's only a quick 30 min drive up the mountain. If you are looking for place to go and experience only the best in Italian culture food and hospitality then Castel Ruggero will blow your mind.

I had a beautiful experience at Castel Ruggero around Christmas time. My american sister in law was visiting Italy and wanted to experience a real wine degustation, so with no much notice the D'Afflitto family organised for us first a visit of the winery and then a delicious buffet together with wine tasting. So good! And the view was breathtaking! The garden as well, beautiful to explore! The colours, the fragrances..

One word: fabulous
Sep 2015 • Couples
The castle, the garden (what a garden), the wine, the winery, and the surrounding Chianti hills perfectly framed the scenario someone could only dream about. D'afflitto family are one in a kind, they will let you experience the real flavours of the Chianti area. Definitely the place to stop by if you are around Florence - located only 20 min drive from the city!
Visited in September 2015 with my girlfriend.
