Excellent find—a friend who used to live in Hilton Head suggested we go here. Important preserved African American history and very few people on the lovely beach. Highly recommend.

This is a great park to explore some African-American history. The signage could be better taken care of, as some of the plaques were unreadable due to weather damage. There is a nice trail that also leads to the beach.

Hilton Head seems intent on making its history almost impossible to find, but Freedom Park (Mitchellville) is one of the few places where researchers are actively uncovering the original sites (what hasn't been lost already) of the first self-governing free African-American city in the U.S. It's a work in progress as of this writing, but if you love and appreciate history, this is a must-see!…
