While visiting Hilton Head last fall, I decided it was time to get back into tennis (with COVID restrictions, outdoor tennis became one of the few "safe" activities in California). I played varsity tennis in high school but was out of practice for about 15 years.

After calling around, I found Van Der Meer tennis and was immediately paired up with an instructor the following day - Scott at Van Der Meer's Shipyard campus.

We spent a lot of time on ground strokes, especially my forehand.

That two-hour lesson totally changed my enjoyment of the game! Just a few tips on the forehand and finally I had a consistent shot.

Each time I get off the court, I so appreciate the lesson from Van Der Meer tennis in Hilton Head.

This was my fourth weekend clinic at VDM, and it was the best ever! Excellent teaching pros, great soft courts, and wonderful participants in the clinic. Louie is a phenomenal pro and person. This was a “Boomer” clinic for older players and it was perfect. Louie left to run in the Boston Marathon, and with Steve at the helm, we didn’t miss a beat after Louie left. Thanks to all of the teaching pros for their patience and instruction.

It was a really good experience that I hope to repeat in the near future. I was very satisfied the way the camp went. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable which helped me to improve my game. Also, they can help you with accommodations in case you need them. Great facilities and if the weather doesn’t help they even have indoor courts.
Thanks to Jim and Scott McKay and all the personal there that made this possible.

Sent my child to Winter Tennis Camp 2021, at VDM tennis facility. Not at all impressed by the tennis training. My child and I both agreed that participants were placed in the same age group rather than their capabilities unless you were a beginner. The area around VDM was very nice but the tennis was lacking. We had a nice winter break in warmer climate but my money would been better spent on private lessons at home rather than tennis training at VDM. My child was bored therefore, VDM gets a Thumbs Down.

The staff except for Mary was horrible. Pretty nasty to customers and not very helpful at all. We just went to another friendlier and better facility. Was willing to buy lots of merchandise but decided to spend over $1000 in merchandise and lessons just 10 minutes away at South Beach Racquet Club. ATTEND AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Recently spent five amazing day as the Van Der Meer Tennis Center as part of the Southern Tennis Escape tennis tournament. Can't talk more highly about the Van Der Meer facilities and staff. Exceptional tennis experience across the board!

The courts were in amazing shape and the Tennis Pros and Pro Shop staff couldn't have been better. The tennis court layout is very inviting as they have so many courts available, but they aren't stacked on top of each other.

I will definitely return next year.....or hopefully sooner!

VanDerMeer is one of the most prestigious names in tennis so I had high hopes for this 10-hour academy that cost $28 per hour with the discount for staying on premises. The instructors are top notch but there was not a lot of instruction. Yes, I hit a lot of balls. Yes, it was fun. However, $28 per hour to hit balls when there are six players on the court is a lot of $$$$. Very little individual instruction, to be specific, I was given five specific tips over 3 days. This was a 4.0+ level camp but there were a few sub 4.0s who registered, so they were put on the second court with the second instructor. Maybe having to segregate these players changed the process but why let them register??

I would go to one of their daily clinics next time, and use the free hour of court time to play on my own. I would not spend the $$$ to do the 3 day academy. Oh, and there was no water provided or any other amenities such as snacks or even a t-shirt.

Overall, I felt like I grossly overpaid.

Once a World Class Tennis Facility that right now has no service and it´s managed very poorly. The service is appalling and the team in place dont understand that they have other guests that have paid for tennis during their vacation at their facility and it is not granted as it seems that is better to cater big groups and tournaments and forget about the individual customers. Not up to standard!

This is a review of the Shipyard Van Der Meer tennis center, not the larger resort. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Shipyard, and were told by the hotel and by Van Der Meer Shipyard staff that we were allowed one free hour of tennis if we made a reservation.

So, we arrived to play ten minutes before our reserved court, only to be told by a different staffer that we did not have free tennis, and that making an appointment meant that we would be charged more! I couldn't believe it. She gave us a walk on rate of $18, but wouldn't honor the statement by the other employee (who was new) that we had a free hour of tennis.

So, our final assessment -- beautiful courts, but truly rude staff. This woman treated us terribly.

We travelled from NY for the Van De Meer adult weekend tennis program. The pro to player ratio was 1:3. They worked on all our strokes with us, recorded us and then Lou, Phil Or Devon worked with us on how to improve. Lou who ran the program has an incredible memory and can identify any players areas of improvement in seconds. He is an outstanding teacher and can demonstrate and help you improve your strokes. By breaking each stroke down and working on it in steps helps you see exactly how to incorporate it into play. We worked very hard in the heat however we both felt we gained a tremendous amount of skill to our strokes and our game. We even shopped a bit in the pro shop. Definitely was worth the trip and we would definitely consider returning with our family. Van De Meer also has a group rate with the Sonesta and everything was arranged. When you walk out of the Sonesta you are already by a few of the courts. They have over 20 courts and at least 5 are indoor in case it rains. This was a fun and tiring weekend all at the same time and we LOVED every minute
