Plan to spend 1 hour minimum to drive the 5 plus miles one-way gravel road. The are a few stops with an audio tour on 1610 AM on your car radio along the way as well. On our visit we say herons, egrets, alligators, and a male bald eagle. Can't wait to come back and spend more time here. Road... More

Looking to get out into the countryside while visiting Savannah, GA? Then this is your destination! The Visitor's center is a beautiful building with a ton of information, great hands-on learning for kids, and maps of the area. There are several different walking/biking trails throughout the 29,000 acres with beautiful views and incredible wildlife sighting! The 4 mile loop around... More

We spent a delightful three hours here while visiting Savannah. The refuge is only a few minutes north of town. There are lots of alligators and a wide variety of bird life. I was so disappointed that I'd not brought my binoculars on the trip, and I asked the lady at the visitor center if by any chance they had... More

What a surprise to find the Savannah Nature reserve in South Carolina! But a short drive from Savannah and well worth visiting. The main access is through a 4.5 drive but I'd urge you to stop and go on one of the several hiking trails, particularly if you like to see a variety of beautiful birds and aren't afraid of... More

Alligators, Egrets, bald eagle, heron, turtles, and many other types of birds. Gorgeous 4 mile scenic drive. We saw so much and got so many amazing photos. This was a highlight of our trip, and we just stumbled on it! Family ranges in age from 22 yrs old down to 10 yrs old, with teenagers in-between. So glad found this.... More

This has been the best thing I've done in Savannah. We went on the drive through the refuge around noon and saw 10 alligators! We could get out of the car and get pictures from a safe distance. This is an absolute must!

Being from Central Illinois we were very intrigued by the SNWR. Lots of birds to view. What we didn't expect to see were alligators in early March. I think we counted 7 before we concluded our drive through the refuge. The AM radio station was helpful as well. If you are close by this area, you should take the time... More

My wife and I love nature and this was a really fun experience. We loved seeing all the wildlife such as, alligators, birds, turtles, etc. We wished we could have seen the bobcat and the other feline that the receptionists mentioned. It's really nice that you can drive around and stop wherever you want.

A hidden gem of a place not too far from Savannah. Nice little museum. Fantastic staff. The volunteer on duty was very knowledgeable and obviously passionate about the refuge and people's experience. Brochures provided are excellent. There are hiking trails and a car trail where you can get off and walk to view the wildlife. A good variety of birds.... More
