About
Nestled amid beautiful lakes and hardwood forests, the Anne Springs Close Greenway is a nature preserve more than twice the size of Central Park, minutes south of Charlotte in Fort Mill, SC. Its 2,100 acres serve as a natural buffer from urban development and provide a wide open space for countless activities – from hiking, biking and horseback riding to picnics, kayaking and more. The land has ties to the Catawba Indians and the Civil War and has been permanently preserved for public use. The Greenway contains native plants and animals, historic buildings, a 36-mile network of trails, and facilities for weddings and other special events. As a non-profit organization, it depends on memberships, program fees, as well as private donations to support annual operations. Main entrances include Lake Haigler, Dairy Barn, Adventure Road, Blue Star and Greenway Stables, all of which provide additional information and trail maps.

ASC Greenway is a true gem. 40 miles of hiking trails, several “lakes” for fishing, a wonderful dog park (membership required) and many other features. The daily non member rate is very reasonable (a couple of bucks) and an annual family membership is about $100. The new welcome center is beautiful and has a very nice dining area.

Recently I took my dog on a walk from the dairy barn over the swinging bridge and then to the lake. It was roughly a 2 Mile walk. Lots of people were out having lunch on the grass and playing in the creek that runs along the trails. The trails are well marked.

This is a pleasant place for hiking and picnicking but the Kayak rental was a total ripoff. $32 for a two-hour tandem kayak that was a piece of junk. After trying to adjust the seat back for 30 minutes to make rowing manageable, I realized the bracket holding the seat was broken in half. With rowing about impossible, we cut the trip short but my back was so sore at this point that we didn't want another (if there was one) replacement. The attendant's response to my complaint? "These are old kayaks." Duh. Aside from the lousy equipment, the lake is very small and not that scenic so there is not much good to say about kayaking at this park. The hiking was pleasant but there as good alternatives elsewhere in the area that don't charge an admission fee.

Anne Springs Close did a wonderful thing when she donated this land to the town. It's a big area with miles of trails, but imo it is no where near worth $12 per person. This is supposed to be a non-profit? The views are quite ordinary. For those who have money to burn: sure come here and pay the fee. But for ordinary people, the admission price is nothing short of ridiculous.

Anne Springs Close Greenway is a beautiful gem. Mrs. Close, who made this gem available, just recently passed. Her love and devotion to nature is obvious everywhere you look. A awesome place to introduce you children to the benefits of outside activities, music, and nature. Make sure you also check out the Canteen for lunch. Yummy food.
I love walking through the trails when I need to chill out and realize what's important in life. Do not miss this lovely place.

During a recent visit to Fort Mill, our hosts took us to "The Greenway" for a lovely afternoon. We visited the Greenway Lawn and purchased food at their canteen, which we enjoyed at the tables under the beautiful trees. Many families with children and pets were there to enjoy the nice grounds.

We headed down to this Greenway on a Sunday afternoon on a nice, warm, sunny day
expecting to do some hiking in the woods. We found that the maps online
and directions to exactly where to start our visit were slightly confusing and
unclear. It would have been helpful to know more about the trails, any interesting
view, etc. We entered the property at the Dairy Barn and main Visitors Center.
Noone there, no appearance of being a place to greet people, just a map of the
Greenway under a shelter. For two dollars each (honor system) to visit, off we
headed. Bathroom facilities were very convenient. Heading down or at least
toward what we thought would be a major trail, we discovered that trail markers
are virtually non-existent...and I do mean NON existent. There were a couple of
old cabins on the property, completely locked up, just there. One was the home
of Billy Graham's grandfather. Inside the empty cabin we could hear something
that sounded like people talking, some recorded voices, I suppose, behind the
padlocked door. Further down the trail we found a lake with some wet trails
around it...kayak rental (weekends, though a volunteer there said that rentals
were going to be available on weekdays as well after Memorial Day). We
struggled the entire trek trying to find a trail, connect with another trail to
get to our eventual destination. Finally at one wet, muddy intersection that
our map didn't show us, we followed some horse tracks toward what we thought
would be a way back to where we started and we came to a......dead end...coming
upon a road we determined where we were and hiked about another mile plus back
to what the map showed as another parking lot with trail access. Only there was
no trail marked, or even evident, so down the road another mile or so we circled
back to the main Dairy Barn entrance where we started out. We weren't really
enthusiastic about creating any trails as we'd seen a couple of big black snakes
on the property, so we wanted to stick to established footfalls. OK, we're not
what you would call expert hikers, but this was the worst marked trail I've ever
seen. If any institution is going to tell people there are hiking trails, they
should at least be marked to a functional extent.
Sorry, Mrs. Close, but we'll hike somewhere else next time.

For those complaining about the entrance fee, realize this is a private park maintained by a non-profit and is sustained through memberships and park entrances. Yes, it's $12 day per adult, but you can get a monthly membership at almost half that rate ($6.50/month) or a family membership for your whole family for a little more than the entrance fee for one adult ($13/month). Even better you can get annual memberships that bring the cost down even more. Obviously, the strategy here is to have members who continue to contribute (and using) the park so that the park is sustained. But the best part is that they don't limit access to members, so if you want to come and visit only once or twice a year, you have the option, but yes you will have to pay. For $12 a day, it's a great value as this is a great park this that is very well maintained with a lot of facilities.
For this saying there are plenty of other similar "free" parks in the area, the parks are not "free". They are paid for and maintained with your tax dollars. I do agree there are other very good public parks in the area, but I would be challenged to find one that is as well managed and maintained, has as good facilities, and is as large as this park.
I have an annual family membership and my family and I thoroughly enjoy this park. We spend a lot of time here. My wife and I take a break from the gym a least once a week and instead come talk a walk along one of their many trails. The workout isn't as intense as the gym, but a lot more relaxing and good for the body, mind, and soul. I absolutely recommend this park, even if you are just paying $12 for the day.

Great idea great trails but I would dare say we were not the only hikers to ever get confused or "lost" on this trail system. And the sad thing is we hike ALL the time. Really frustrating...planned on running 3 miles ended up doing 5. Not sure why they could not use the entrance fee monies to place better signage

Where is the waterfall located?

The only water falls that I am aware of in the Greenway is the spill way from lake Haggler (spelling?). Access off highway 21 opposite Colthrup road. Once you get to the earth dam, there is a small trail that leads down to the bottom of the dam spillway. There are also other trails starting from that point. One takes the high way around the lake. All beautiful
