- Marco SRineyville, Kentucky144 contributionsBeach with plentiful seashellsMy wife and I had never been to Folly Beach so we thought we’d go while in Charleston. We enjoyed the big waves and the great weather. We thought the dark gray sand was different from what we’re used to. Not sure if the sand is that color all year or just this time of year. Anyway, it was a good day just relaxing on the beach drinking some beers soaking up the sun. Plus the pier is very nice and goes way out in the ocean. They had plenty of built in seats and fishing pole holders for people who want to fish off the pier.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 8, 2023
- Katherine A, The Hidden TurtleRaleigh, North Carolina17 contributionsGo enjoy the sunriseLove Folly Beach. Love it better in the early morning when quiet on a weekday. The sand and swimming are great although there are warnings for riptides. Great place to watch sunrise! Parking is on street or several places along beach road. Parking at pier is $10 for day.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- Brenda Donselma... TElizabethtown, Kentucky212 contributionsLovely sunset! We went specifically to see the ocean and the sunset. The pier is a well built place to watch the sunset with a fair amount of seating to relax and enjoy. There is a bar at the beginning of the pier if you so choose to drink while relaxing.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- Howard GNew Rochelle, New York90 contributionsPerfect Winter BeachA perfect winter beach! Not for swimming (though we did jump in once), but just beautiful for walking. And we could bring our dog! He needed to be on a leash but we got a 30 ft retractable and he could do plenty of running around. This was as low key and relaxed a week as could be... just what we needed!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 29, 2023
- stac mJefferson, Georgia80 contributionsGate keeper rip offNice clean beach, great to watch surfers. Can take dogs early morning and after 6 pm. Park on the street. Cheapest way We were in a motorhome. Arrived at pier parking at 6 pm. Lots of empty spots. Large tractor trailer parked in lot. Gate attendant said she made a special accommodation for the truck driver. But couldn't for us. Our RV was smaller than tractor trailer. Gate attendant wanted to charge us $30. To park for 15 minutes, so we could get some pictures. We left and parked on the street for $5. I hate to tell the attendant, if you make exceptions for one, you have to for all. Wondering if the City knows she's doing this. So parked on the street, walked 100 feet, got our pics and left with $25. Still in our pockets.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2024
- Kailee S36 contributionsMust See BeachIt is evident that the residents of Folly Beach take pride in the island. The Beach was the cleanest of the 3 we visited while in SC, and wasn't overly crowded. We also found 3 shark teeth while there (the pride of our trip). As with everywhere in SC, you'll have to pay to park, so be prepared for that.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 7, 2024
- Laura BRoanoke, Virginia277 contributionsNice large beach with beautiful pier!We drove down to Folly Beach from Surfside Beach for the day so that we could comb the beach for sharks teeth and other fossils. Husband found a few teeth. We arrived around 10a, purchased parking at the pier. Pier is huge with store and restaurant. Ample bathrooms and handicap ramps. Beach is beautiful and wide. Lifeguards galore watching swimmers near pier. Tons of space for everyone visiting. Those large two toned blue umbrellas are everywhere and annoying…but…had lunch at Rita’s on the corner, yum! Daughters got ice cream from the pier store! Drive down from Myrtle area wasn’t bad and not too long. Overall quaint beach town that I’d definitely like to explore again.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 10, 2024
- Cynthia’s ReviewBradenton, Florida116 contributionsA great beach to stay cool and relaxThis beach is so relaxing for locals and those visiting the Charleston area. Make sure you go early, especially in the prime time of summer. You can even rent umbrellas and chairs if you don’t want to haul things. You will have a great day and don’t forget to check out the local eateries in the area.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024
- The PunisherCharleston, South Carolina380 contributionsA nice day at Folly.Went to visit Folly Beach with some friends and I hadn't been there in years. We went West to the far and checked out the Charleston County park. The beach was very nice and not too crowded. The waves were nice but there were dangerous undertow signs warning people about getting into the water. We we're able to get into the water a little but didn't want to push our luck. The facilities and the Chas Co Park were nice though and I highly recommend paying the $15 at the park for the amenities.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 1, 2024

Beautiful area, but was different this year. Parking up to $50 to park to go to dinner and shop around Center Street. Next, family was on beach our first day and brother in law, quietly sitting on beach with all 13 of us (ages 2 to 77) and life guard came up behind him and said, "I am going to have to ticket you for the exposed part of your beer can. The can was approx. 2 to 3" above the top of the cozy. We asked for a warning due to not know that no part of the can can be above the top of the cozy. He said no warnings. He proceeded to write a ticket for $65 and said since you are being corporative I won't write if for $140. For the rest of our week we were watched like a hawk, driving by us 10 to 15 times a day to check on us to ensure we didn't have an exposed can top. Next my golf cart was parked legally and paid for for the entire day, but I was given a $25 ticket. I had to go to the court house to protest and was told the ticket would be voided. I sort of got the feeling this happens a lot and most people just pay it out of convenience vs going to fight it. Bottom line here, I go on vacation to relax. I do not enjoy the the price gouging on parking, the over aggressive life guards constantly harassing us by driving by us checking out our camp. Not the cites fault, but first night we decided to go to Taco Boy for dinner, as this was always our favorite place to eat in Folly and we cannot wait to eat there. Upon arriving at 5:30 to put our names in we told 2 hours, which we expected due to our large party of 12. After 2 hours checked in and they said an additional half hour. Upon checking again 30 minutes later they said another hour. It is now 9pm and they are seating us for dinner after checking in at 5;30. When we came in there was hardly anyone else there eating and they were closing in one hour. We were rushed our entire meal and felt the waitresses wanted us gone. We no longer will visit this restaurant and very unlikely that we will come back to Folly. This was our 6th trip there and we spend on average over $10,000 each trip. I do not recommend Folly for a fun vacation. Seems the locals just want to find a way to get as much cash from us as they can. I don't mind paying for fun and convenience but this was neither. Shame on you, Folly Beach for being so greedy.

Holiday weekend. Folly Beach set up barricades in all street parking areas. Parking lots charging 40-50$ were at capacity. Parked several blocks from the beach avoiding private property. Came back to a 150.00 parking ticket for an emergency Covid parking ban? Not sure how parking and Covid Emergency could possibly be related. We live in a resort area and this type of rip off by the city would shut down the tourist trade. Folly Beach will not have to worry about any of our group returning....

It’s a great beach but do yourself a favor and park a few blocks out of town where parking on the street is free. Keep your tires off the pavement when parking which is easy to do and you’ll be fine. I usually don’t mind paying for parking when traveling as it helps keep the city nice but I was treated so horribly I refused to give another penny of my money to the city. City employees are stupid not to realize this. They lost money on me parking on the street by their behavior and I hope others park on the street to minimize what funding the city gets.

We’re from Greenville SC and we decided to take our two year old granddaughter to the beach for the day. We decided to try Folly Beach. When we get there we go left onto the island and try to go out past the busy section and we get to a section of parking along a wall right beside the beach. We noticed we had to pay to park. Which I find sad you have to pay to park at a public beach. Well it was supposed to be just a few dollars so we do everything on the pay box screen and put in our credit card and thought we paid for two cars to park for a few hours. Well we spend about two hours on the beach which was nice till we get to the car. We noticed both cars had a parking ticket for $25 per car. Folly beach make sure your parking fee boxes are working before you give someone a ticket. Thanks for ruining our day. This family will never be back!!!!!!

My husband and I stayed in Charleston for a few days so we visited the beach a couple times. It is kinda like myrtle beach but on a mini scale, there’s some restaurants and beach shops along the main strip so lots to see. We were very disappointed the pier was closed because it was being rebuilt, however the part they had completed so far was very nice and once it’s finished I think it’s going to be beautiful. My biggest complaint is parking there is AWFUL if you get there after about 9am. One day we went super early and we’re able to park in the pier parking lot ($10 for the day). That’s the cheapest parking we saw in the entire area. There isn’t a big public parking lot or parking garage. And everything is first come first serve. The day we left one of the private lots was charging $40 to park for the day! I personally would never have paid that. So, biggest thing: get there early for the best and cheapest parking as the $10 lot fills up early and it’s very small. The beach was very clean and we found lots of small seashells. The water in July was very warm.

We stayed in a house on the beach at 14th and we’re amazed at how many surfers were in the water at all times of the day. I would recommend getting away from the center of town and driving out this way. Much quieter, wide sandy beach. You do need to make sure you pay for parking at the kiosk because it is monitored and ticketed.

Be warned: if you have more than a very limited amount of time in Charleston, DO NOT COME HERE! We were looking for a quick beach afternoon to get out of the city and boy were we disappointed. We later learned there are a couple other nearby beaches that are much nicer (Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms). The only reason we came was because Folly was convenient from Charleston and we did not rent a car. Instead, we ubered, and what was supposed to be a 25 min car ride took nearly an hour due to the traffic we encountered on the county road close to the beach. We were told this is a regular occurrence. It was probably 3:00, not a time I'd expect inbound beach traffic.
The beach itself is dirty and very honky tonk. The white chairs are free to sit on, but the blue ones must be rented. We mistakenly sat on a blue one and the lifeguard told us we had to move. The only redeeming quality was the Blu beach bar we went to for a few (delicious) drinks and a bite to eat.
Another thing, if you are not renting a car beware that it is difficult to get an uber or lyft back to Charleston. We were unable to do so and instead had to hop in a taxi at the hotel right along the beach. The cost was slightly less than double what an Uber would have been, but when you're stranded there aren't many options.

I went there on vacation, I am a veteran and follow parking guidelines. I parked where I truly thought it was free. I got a ticket in the mail, NEVER going there again. YOu would think they would make parking more friendly to support the local businesses, but no the fat cats in government will charge you as much as they can. Almost ALL Southern beached have easy/free parking, but not Folley Beach, they don't care, they have their govt security.

I wish there was a zero star to rate the city at Folly Beach and their handling of parking. All of the so called "legal lots" were $50.00 to park to walk to the beach.
We found a spot on a side street with no signs stating no parking, but followed all the rules, and still received a ticket for $150. $150, are you kidding me?
Obviously, this beach does not want tourist to ever visit again. Well, I'll tell you. It worked for us. We will never be back, and will tell our friends to never visit either.
You should be ashamed for taking advantage of tourists that are just trying to visit your beach.
Good Bye, Folly Beach.

I’m going to be in Charleston for New Years this year, is the Flip Flop Drop worth attending? Or is it super crowded? It’s going to be a group of 20-30 somethings going. Also are the bars in the area fun on new years for after the flip flop drop?

Hi all! Where did you rent chairs at the beach? Do they have umbrellas as well? Is it easy to reserve this? Thank you!

You can rent chairs and umbrellas at the beach. Also, I believe the condo had some in their storage area.

My son and I will be in Charleston in March. My son (6) loves shelling so we were thinking of going out to Folly beach for a day. Any suggestions of where and what time of day is best that time of year for looking for shells? Thanks!
Written January 28, 2019
The tides and winds have a lot of influence on finding shells. If you go to the far ends of the beach you'll have a better chance. It can be chilly in March, so dress accordingly. You might call the Edisto State Park office and ask them about finding shells. They are a bit more exposed and might have a good crop. Definitely time you visits to low tide, as the beach tends to disappear during high tide on both beaches.
