About
Angelina & Sarah Grimké turned their backs on their home & family to begin a crusade fighting the injustices to women & those enslaved in the 19th century. Known as traitors to their society during their lifetime, 180 + years later these ladies are still influencing current generations. Follow in the footsteps of these two courageous women & learn how their progressive beliefs influenced these movements. The tour is based on excerpts of the novel "Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd

Wonderful tour, one of the best I've ever taken. The subject matter is fascinating, of course, and not well known, and Lee Ann truly brings it to life. The tour proceeds almost like a story unfolds, one keeps wanting to learn more! And of course walking the streets of beautiful, historic Charleston, including lesser known streets, is the icing on the cake.
Highly recommend!

Lee Anne is an expert in her field and possesses a wide range of knowledge about Charleston history and the Grimke family. I had a personal interest in learning more about Free People of Color and Lee Ann answered all of my questions and cleared up several details for me. I truly enjoyed this tour and would recommend it to anyone who wants to supplement their knowledge of the South with information that is not widely known.

Lee Ann is a very engaging person, easy to talk with and listen to, and she knows so much history, not only specific to the Grimke family and the sisters' abolitionist leadership, but also Charleston and its history. She took us places we would never have thought to go, like the jail and workhouse site, which led to learning a lot about how the enslaved of the town were treated. Her visual aids (a binder full of photos, drawings and other historical stuff) were a big help in filling out the stories she told us. We'd highly recommend this tour, and you don't need to have read the book she references (now I want to read it). We'll do another tour with her on the Civil War in Charleston next time we visit.

We loved the Grimke Sister tour! Lee Ann was fabulous as our tour guide. She walked us through so much history in such an informal way. It was like being told a story over a couple of hours while slowly walking the beautiful streets of Charleston. We learnt so much about these amazing women, their family and the people who lived in Charleston during this time. Thanks so much!

My sister and I had a wonderful time with LeeAnn as our guide on the Grimke Sisters Tour in Charleston. LeeAnn was extremely knowledgeable and fun, relating the story from The Invention of Wings with the broader history of Charleston. By pointing out the historic landmarks and relating stories of its history, she truly made our day in Charleston a memorable one! I plan to return with a group of bookclub friends to enjoy this tour with them as well very soon!

My friend and I enjoyed this tour so much while in Charleston. We learned so m much about the Grimkes, and about life in Charleston during their lives. New research Lee Ann added made the time very special, and greatly enhanced what we knew about the sisters. Lee Ann was a delight who answered questions thoroughly. A memorable tour!

Excellent, well informed guide Lee Ann Bain leads tour highlighting the Grimké sisters, family and history of Charleston. Make this tour a priority to learn about early abolitionists, suffragists, religious and social culture changes over time. This tour was my favorite because I learned so much and was able to ask questions.

My husband and I were really looking forward to our trip to Charleston and to the tour about the Grimke sisters. Unfortunately, Hurricane Matthew interfered with our plans. The information we had was that there was flooding and mud, some roads were closed and power was not fully restored. So we cancelled our flight and our hotel reservations. We also cancelled restaurant reservations in three prominent places to dine. Everyone was understanding and offered full refunds. However, when I called to cancel our tour of the Grimke Sisters, we were told that we would not be receiving a refund. They offered a tour at another time or evidence that we had made a charitable donation. But we would not get our money back! It seems to me if there is a natural disaster of significant magnitude, and one is traveling a significant distance, and the reports available indicate continued clean up that we should have had a refund for a tour that we could not take. The woman I spoke with was not willing to listen or to understand our reasons for cancelling. I wish we could have been there, but since we were not, it seems to me that a refund is due to us.

This person purchased tickets through the Preservation Society of Charleston for their Fall Fundraiser. The Preservation Society arranged all reservations and monetary transactions; thus we did not receive any funds from this person. It is OUR policy not to charge customers in advance for this very reason.

I am so happy I scheduled this tour for our first morning in Charleston. I read the “Invention of Wings” and knew I wanted to learn more about the sisters while in their hometown. Tour guide Carol taught me so much more about their lives and which parts of the book are true. She also went well beyond the book to discuss the lives of their descendants, as well as the history of Charleston in general. Her tour gave us the important details of Charleston, which helped us make decisions regarding what to do during the rest of our visit. I will always remember the tour and the places we visited. Thank you, Carol!

We had the wonderful tour 2 years ago. We loved it. I presented the book at my church and told about the tour. I have been asked to speak to my Circle in April 2019. Will the tours still be going on then? Thank you, Nancy Brown Brown2003@aol

Where does the walking tour go? Since we are already taking another walking tour I don't want to pay for duplication. Also how much is this tour?

Hi, the tour is $25 per person cash or check at the time of the tour and is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. We walk about a mile and half. You will see the old jail/workhouse area, slave mart, one of their homes. You will go by things that you probably will see on your other tour but we discuss them in reference to the Grimke Sisters. If you would like to share the name of the tour you have signed up for, I can better answer that for you. Thank you for your interest Lee Ann

Hi, The tour is such a specialty type of tour that we do not get requests to go out daily. We try to work with the guests to accommodate their schedules. You can go to our website listed on the front page to send a request( sorry it said I can't put in a website link in a comment) or you may give me a call at 843-822-5248 and we can talk about your schedule. Thank you for your interest. Lee Ann
