I was informed by the concierge at our hotel that Berlin's For Men probably was the best clothing store in Charleston. Located at the corner of King Street and Broad Street, not far from the Historic District, it has been in business since 1883 so they must be doing something well. But I didn't have any high expectations. I went for the purpose of seeing if they had any new Peter Millar shirts. I already have nine of them but the Greenbrier website, where I had purchased most of them, indicated that a new style was coming out. Sure enough, Berlin's had them and I bought two. It didn't him very long to realize I was in the market. But he didn't have my size in one coat, I didn't like the color in another and my wife vetoed another possibility for being "too much Florida." George was scrambling. I broke the ice. "I'd like to make a complete outfit--sports jacket, slacks, shirt, tie and swatch," I said. His eyes brightened. We started looking, trying to match things up. All of a sudden, I discovered a Canali sports coat, dark blue with light blue pattern, light and airy and distinguished. "This is one," I said. My wife agreed. George nodded in approval. We added a pair of Hickey-Freeman grey slacks, three Eton shirts, two Canali ties and another by J.Z. Richards and a stylish purple swatch. I won't tell you how much it all set me back but, suffice to say, George was happy and very appreciative. The jacket, slacks and shirts were custom fit by Berlin's tailor and shipped to Chicago in a unique box unlike any I have ever received from a clothing store. Like it was delivered by hand. No wrinkles. Very first class. With that kind of business acumen, it is easy to see why Berlin's For Men has been a success for more than 130 years.…
