Best book store in Charleston
Sep 2021
No matter where my wife and I travel, we always are looking for a good book store. We are book lovers and we have many interests, from Civil War to World War II to Hollywood to Old West to sports to biography to ancient history, and you never know where you'll find a rare book or out-of-print book that strikes your fancy. Interestingly, we found a few at Blue Bicycle Books in Charleston, South Carolina. Located at 420 King Street, near the corner of King and John streets, near Marion Square, it was founded in 1995 as Boomer's Books but became Blue Bicycle Books in 2007 when it was bought by local writer and longtime employee Jonathan Sanchez. Open from 10 to 7:30 Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 on Sunday, it hosts over 200 authors for events each year. It has a great stock of military history, paperback fiction, classics, modern first editions signed by Harper Lee, William Faulkner and Margaret Mitchell, every new and used book ever written by Charleston writers, children's books, cookbooks, rare and out-of-print books and non-fiction. After browsing for only an hour, we discovered--and purchased--four books: Historic Charleston and the Lowcountry; The Failed Promise: Reconstruction, Frederick Douglass and the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson; Dead Reckoning--World War II; and I Will Run Wild--the Pacific war from Pearl Harbor to Midway. It's always fun to browse through a book store in search of books you never thought about but are glad you found.

Good Charleston books section
Jun 2021
I stopped in Blue Bicycle Books during my visit to Charleston in June 2021. The book store has a very good Charleston books section.

Looking for local
Feb 2020 • Family
Nice spot to visit to check out a whole section at the front of the store dedicated to local authors. My kids love books and one souvenir they always get is a book about the place they are visiting...Blue Bicycle has just that!

Fun, Unique, Dripping with Local Feel

This is a great little store! They have a smaller selection, but something for everyone (including children & teems). The one downside is that there are very few places to sit.

Plenty of Gems
Jan 2019 • Solo
Not a large used book shop, but contained several books on my search list. I bought one but could have easily walked out with 4-5 more. Reason to return. Well organized and more spacious than your typical used book emporium. Good offerings in nonfiction, both hard cover and paperback. Good places to sit down and read. Relaxing atmosphere with soothing music. For travelers needing a book: you will likely find something here and enjoy your search.

Puzzling, with so much potential
Dec 2018 • Couples
Quaint bookstore that HAD strong potential. We make a point of visiting the best local bookstores in any city we visit. Tattered Cover in Denver. Powell’s Books in Portland. Sundog Books in Seaside FL. This one disappointed. Long hallway with lots of small spaces - though this doesn’t have to be all bad. But the bookshelves were somewhat sparse, maybe less than 75% full. It lacked what we love in a local bookstore - overflowing inventory, staff pics, owner recommendations, “what we are reading”. When we asked the one employee for some ideas more than once he came up empty and directed us to areas which didn’t really have many options. No comfy sitting spaces. The store didn’t suck you in as we expected. My one mission was to leave with an intriguing read for the plane ride home. After an hour, despite full willingness, and eager hopes, we left to return to the hotel empty handed. Would not recommend. Sorry Blue Bicycle.

Cute shop
Oct 2018 • Solo
This cute little shop gets a lot of famous authors for book signings. They often have signed books for sale in addition to a selection of used books, and some antique books as well.

Cozy, Charming and Helpful Staff
Sep 2018
Love, love, love this book store! From the themed rooms to the attentive staff to the books to tuck away with a good read, this is the type of store I wish I lived closer to so that I could become a regular. Despite swearing we didn’t need any more books, my husband and I each left with one.

This bookstore is lovely. It is not large but the atmosphere is warm and inviting. It has some of the local books and history. It is a good boutique store.
