First, some calibration: Prior to fishing with Capt. David, I've fished with six other charters in various locales, for various target fish. So, I feel that I have a decent sample size against which to compare Capt. David and Marsh Maven. Capt. David ranks #1 with me amongst this cohort. He is extremely knowledgeable about marsh fishing and he is skilled in conveying that knowledge in a comfortable and instructive manner. As I now know, success in fishing for ambush predators in small holes or at creek inlets in the marsh is critically dependent on bait presentation/position, and missing a "spot" by a couple of feet makes the difference between a strike and a miss. In this context, Capt. David is astonishingly perceptive in discerning these "sweet spots" and then directing my casts to very specific places that looked to my untrained eye to be little different than the adjacent areas. But, different they were (see below). In addition, he is very easy to talk to about the Charleston area in general, fishing thoughts, etc. Equally important, he is gregarious without being garrulous – he knew when to quietly let me fish. Apparently, also critical for successful marsh fishing is to catch the correct tide, as this area has very large tidal flow. Initially, I spoke with a few marsh fishing charters along with Capt. David, but Capt. David was the only one who specifically indicated an advantageous start time to catch the best action per the tide. The other captains simply asked me if I wanted an afternoon trip or a morning trip. Perhaps they assumed that I would be knowledgeable enough to choose the "best" time on my own (I wasn't). But enough about Capt. David – what about the fishing? We were out on the water for about 4.5 hrs, about 1 hour of which was dedicated to traveling to the fishing spots and acquiring bait (finger mullet via a cast net). We targeted trout and redfish, and fished two trout locales and three redfish holes. The trout fishing, with plastic bait, resulting in catching seven trout and one lizard fish (!). In addition, I lost two fish after hooking them; one was a trout, and one I did not see. All of the trout were in the 12 – 15" range. So, ten strikes over an about 2-hr period. We then targeted redfish, using live shrimp and finger mullet for bait. Two of the three spots produced strikes; one did not. In total, I caught five redfish on five strikes, over a 1.5-hr period. All were in the 15 – 17" range. I also caught a grunt on a live shrimp. As an eventful and delightful aside, while we were trout fishing, we were befriended by a dolphin, which came right up to the boat, extended its snout to us alongside the boat, and hung around for several minutes. It even allowed me to pet its snout (probably not a good idea). We assumed it was begging for food, so we gave it a few shrimp. Overall, I caught 14 fish on 16 strikes over a 3.5-hr fishing period – an unqualified success by my fishing standards! Capt. David makes it easy and fun, and I learned a few new fishing tips that I can use moving forward. I would strongly recommend him without qualifications.

Thank you for fishing with me and for the thoughtful review. One of the many reasons I enjoy spending time on the water fishing is every experience is different. That day was one to remember. Thanks again!

We had a great time with captain David. He’s friendly and knowledgeable about where and how to catch the fish. We caught a couple of species of fish-sea trout and red fish. All around great time and would recommend to anyone who wants a fun time out on the water in Charleston from beginner to experienced. Thanks Captain David
