About
Theatre 99 is Charleston's Home for Improv Comedy. It is a 130 seat theatre, not a club with tables. We specialize in improvisational comedy which is unscripted theatre. It makes for a very funny night. We just don't want users of Trip Advisor to come expecting stand up comics telling jokes on a microphone. Theatre 99 does host stand up comedy shows periodically, but our main focus is improv comedy on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. Thank you for supporting live performance!

Really fun night of comedy at Theatre 99. Like the description says this is an improv show and not stand up, so audience input for the bits is not only encouraged, but basically mandatory for the show's material.

There were two main performances and each were really quite fun. I preferred the second act since it involved more members and was a little more high energy, but I laughed out loud plenty of times for both. The humor varies from troupe member but is very raunchy and of course quick-witted. The troupe playing so perfectly off the audience really makes the whole performance.

Highly recommended for a nice night activity in Charleston.

My first improv. Hilariously funny way to spend a Saturday evening. The talented troupe performed a variety of skits based on audience suggestions. Ever seen grown men as caterpillars? Open seating, cozy venue, no bad seats. Cash bar. For $20 you can buy the performers a round.

Big laughs and a great room for Improv. Would highly recommend for a date night or night out with friends. Staff were super nice and made it so everyone could enjoy their time! The owners talked to my friends and I after the show and really made us feel at home. Will be back soon!

If your looking for some fun and laughter - look no further! My spouse and I had a great time laughing at the improv riot at Theater 99. Price is great. Older building so don’t expect luxury - but atmosphere is proper for the fun and laughs you will experience. Highly recommend as it was recommended to us!

We were expecting something like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” That show is mostly funny with just a little bit of crude. This show is the opposite— a ton of crude with a little funny. I think they rely on the f bomb for
laughs. If you can’t get laughs without the f bomb then you aren’t that funny!! When they say it isn’t family friendly, believe them. We made the mistake of thinking it would just be a little crude but the funny would override that. That wasn’t the case. Stream
“whose line is it anyway” instead. You’ll laugh much harder and won’t be as uncomfortable.

I was at the show last Saturday, June 30. It was my second time at the show. I laughed so hard that my gut hurt. This is a great thing to do if you’re ever in Charleston. It is a wonderful night out. You will not regret it. You will laugh so hard your face will hurt later. They are improv wizards.

It is a small, old venue but everyone was so nice! It’s a place for students to practice improvisation. Some of the teachers participate as well. I had never been to anything like this. They have a small concession area with wine and snacks. It’s an older, somewhat rundown place but it was great fun!

My fiancé and I went here in the Spring of 2016 and it was great! It was a pretty cool atmosphere and despite my skeptical-ness at first, they were really funny. We did the “Laugh for a Lincoln” show which was all improv comedy and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend.

We called the THEATRE to ask if we could come to the Improv show later that evening. Told them there were 3 of us on our 1st visit to Charleston. The girl said " yes come on down"
One hour later we arrived and the SAME girl informed us they were sold out!
She asked if I had a reservation. I said when I called you just 1 hour ago, you did not suggest a reservation!! She said the theatre only seats 120 and I should have come 30 minutes early. We walked 6 blocks in the cold for nothing.

We walked to Theatre 99 from the King Charles Best Western (about 1-1/2 blocks). The theater is above the bicycle shop and access is gained by a metal staircase at the rear of the building. The admission price couldn't be beat and has to be the cheapest thing to do in Charleston. There is a cash bar inside if you want soda or something stronger to sip on during the show. We went on a Wednesday night and the place was full.

The chairs are sweet! Very reminiscent of an old time theater, less padding and a little smaller than present day seats, but neat features like being able to feel like you are reclining a little and being able to sit back actually creates more leg room so people could get by easily without making you get up.

The show itself, the night we went, was divided into two parts with a short intermission in the middle. The first half was an improv based upon a word supplied by the audience and then some short skits. This was done by a troupe of performers. The second half was done by the two main headliners at Theatre 99. They interviewed an audience member volunteer about her job (which ended up being a really weird one) and then they made some hilarious skits out of the information.

The show was really done well and provided us with many laughs, so much so that when we got home we looked to see if there was anything similar in our area. The performers really had a great knack for coming up with material on the spot. They might have to find a bigger theater in the future!
