I had high hopes. I wouldn’t go out of your way. Rainbow buildings- okay, cute- but there are cars parked out front, obstructing any cute photo ops. Also, a giant construction sign right in the middle of one building ruins the aesthetic

Homes of the from days past. These are beautiful homes built prior to the Civil War and into the late 19th Century. Beautiful to see. The cost a fortune to maintain. The local historical department in the city goverentment controls what and how work can be done on them. You need megs money to maintain one. Regularly patrked here when going to downtown Charleston.

You see the image of Rainbow Row on towels, paintings, and tons of touristy trinkets. It's a bunch of neighboring houses painted pretty colors. Go to any beach along the Gulf or southern Atlantic coast and you'll see the same thing.

These infamous houses are a must see supposedly for a visit to Charleston.
It had already been a long, hot day with lots of walking before me and my 9 yr old daughter made it to Rainbow Row. So maybe that jaded me slightly.
She was in awe of the pretty pastel colored houses. Some have lovely flower boxes too.
While they’re undeniably interesting from a historical architectural perspective, they’re not overly impressive in a city with so many amazing historical homes and buildings.
I wouldn’t go out of my way just to see Rainbow Row. However if you’re going to be in that area visiting Waterfront Park and the Battery area, it’s a nice addition as they’re all somewhat close together.

This area of Charleston is very architecturally pleasing and worth a visit to stroll around the neighborhoods. many of these residents are well over 100 years old and they have plenty of charm and stories to tell. many of the homes are on the historic registry and have placards that tells the story of the first residents. You can easily spend hours reading on the placrds.

Yes, it is just exteriors of houses that are painted bright colors, but it is still neat to see. It is close to Waterfront Park and the park at the tip, so if it’s a nice day and you can walk a decent distance, I’d recommend tying a stroll past Rainbow Row in with the other two parks.
If taking a walk doesn’t work for you or if the weather doesn’t cooperate, driving by will suffice. But it’s definitely a good photo opp.

Yes, it might be overhyped for what it is. A block of aesthetic, pastel colored house. But still really pretty and worth a photo op. I’d suggest going after the sun sets to avoid the sun blowing out the photos.

Walking down East Bay Street offered views of these gorgeous historical homes. It reminded me of a strip I saw when I was out in San Francisco on a tour.
Make sure to make time to walk the streets of Charleston and not just drive through the city - you don’t want to miss any of this!

Such a cute area! Clean and low key, pet friendly, family friendly, and set close to downtown! Unique antique houses painted pastel colors that bring cheer to all who walk by! Nice stroll and sightsee!

I was excited to see this but was worried about parking. We parked in a garage over by the aquarium as we went out to Fort Sumter early. Decided we should just walk and see sights along the way. That was a mistake! It was miserably hot and humid and the kids complained just about the entire way. We gave up before reaching our destination and had lumch instead, then walked back to the car. We decided to drive by to at least see it. For all the effort we put in, it was very underwhelming. Dont get me wrong, it was nice to see the homes in the area, but if I could do it again, I would have just drove by in the first place and not have gone through the trouble!

Is there anyplace nearby to park a small RV to walk this area?
Written November 26, 2019
There is some street parking that I think would accommodate a small RV. There are also a few parking lots within walking distance. Hope this helps. Enjoy!
