About Holy City History Tours
Holy City History Tours has been dedicated since our founding to telling the stories of the women and men who were written out of the history books. We bring the stories of these forgotten figures to life with informative entertainment. Each tour showcases Charlestonians who endured enormous hardships, overcame nearly impossible circumstances, and helped propel society into the future. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you cry, and sometimes you feel awe-inspired. With each tour, we aim to give each guest a real and authentic experience of Charleston and its history.

Charleston Ghost Tour: Two Bars, One Graveyard, and a Ghost Story

It’s a bar crawl, history walk, and paranormal experience with a tarot reading for dessert.

Charleston is home of the supernatural, paranormal, and existential: 350 years of graveyards, ghosts, and ghouls in a drinking town with a history problem.

Starting at one of Charleston's most notorious watering holes, an upscale dive, we begin our experience at the bar. Listen to ghost stories and tales of Charleston’s darker side while enjoying your favorite beverage.

From the bar, we walk to a graveyard. Learn how to see a ghost, and along the way, you may even answer the questions, "Are we alone?," and "Why are we here?"

From the graveyard, we walk to another bar. We finish the evening with more history and ghost stories and a tarot reading.

Charleston’s Strong Women of the South History Tour

The Strong Women of the South History Tour is an exploration of historical Charleston from the perspective of the founding mothers and women of every color who contributed to our Great American Dream. Along the way, you will discover the beautiful truth: Charleston is the matriarchal capital of the western world, a city once owned and controlled by women.

Our exploration begins at the alleged execution site of America's First Female Serial Killer. We stand in the spot where she met her fate and hear her story. Then, you get to decide: was she really a serial killer or a woman protecting her rights!

Next, we visit the homes and sites of the “Old Maids," Women’s Rights Activists, Printers, Artisans, Madams, Shopkeepers, and Plantation owners while discovering their contributions and conundrums, all written over by modern history.

Last, we visit the homes and shops of the women who built this great city.

Charleston’s African-American History & Philip Simmons House Tour

This tour is an exploration of Charleston's 350 year old African community. Our experience starts at the Philip Simmons House where one of the greatest African-American artists of the 20th century created a lifetime of beauty. Led by museum docents, witness the humble life of a great Charleston artisan.

We continue our experience by walking down America Street, the center of Charleston’s African-American community. Along the way, learn about and witness the trials and tribulations of the past and present.

We stop briefly at the edge of the African-American community to give a powerful visualization of class division that still exists in the city today.

Finally, we walk to Mother Emanuel AME Church. Learn about how free people of color came together to form flourishing communities and houses of worship. Learn how the Emanuel 9 Shooting brought the entire world together in the fight against racism.

Next, we venture down East Bay Street, passing Rainbow Row. Behold gorgeous mansions, and witness breathtaking views of the Charleston Harbor and White Point Garden. Walk in the footsteps of pirates and their captors.

Next, we turn inward and walk through Charleston’s South of Broad neighborhood. Learn about the man George Washington and Thomas Jefferson said was the true father of America.

My family went on this tour and loved all the extras we got from the guide being such a positive eccentric human being. And the little sayings he’d add in that stick in our brains. Would definitely recommend this tour. Have fun in Charleston!

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of attending this tour last week-- and we both loved it! Larry is witty and a treasure trove of information. I was amazed throughout the tour at the non-assuming buildings that I would've ignored had Larry not invited us into their stories. We learned about so many women -- from America's first serial killer, to Ben Franklin's business partner, to enslaved women who changed the face of Charleston. These stories, and the HUGE amount of context, will genuinely change how you see the city.

Appreciated the small group atmosphere. Was looking for more Charleston Supernatural History. Graveyards were temporarily closed so we were unable to enter to get the full experience. Not for us.
