About
Holy City History Tours has been dedicated since our founding to telling the stories of the women and men who were written out of the history books. We bring the stories of these forgotten figures to life with informative entertainment. Each tour showcases Charlestonians who endured enormous hardships, overcame nearly impossible circumstances, and helped propel society into the future. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you cry, and sometimes you feel awe-inspired. With each tour, we aim to give each guest a real and authentic experience of Charleston and its history.

Larry was an excellent excellent tour guide. He spent lots of time with the stories and the information. He was super knowledgeable and just delivered this information with much humor. I absolutely highly recommend this tour especially with Larry.

We had the Tarot card readings at the Irish bar on Church St. Larry is quite a character, definitely an entertainer, and imparted a great knowledge of the history of religions and the history of Charleston during our visit. He has a spiritual energy and deep perception of people, and the Tarot readings were astoundingly accurate. Anyone with an open mind should do this.

I would leave more stars, if possible. Larry was absolutely amazing. The historical facts that I learned were fascinating and almost unbelievable but I was able to verify the most obscure things via Google. If you sign up for this tour you will be very fortunate if Larry is your guide. I would do this tour again.

Had a great time with Larry on the African-American History & Philip Simmons House Tour! Definitely recommend for anyone interested in learning more about Charleston and the people that call it home. I learned so much I hadn't heard before on previous tours I've done in Charleston. These important stories need to be heard!

A brilliant, fascinating, hard-hitting tour into the heart of darkness of America where beauty canco- exist with slavery and the spirit of a people taken from Africa can be muzzled but not silenced.

Larry is very knowledgable and is natural storyteller. He brings the dignity of his subjects to life. If you visit Charleston, this tour is a must. If you want to understand America's original sin. this tour is a must. If you want to hear true stories that will make you cry and rejoice and show the depth of humankind's cruelty and dignity, then this tour is for you. This tour should be made mandatory for all schoolchildren in Charleston.

This was a true history lesson that covered topics outside of Charleston but linked to its history. Stories of potential despair presented by my guide Larry with a sense of optimism that was really uplifting. The Phillip Simmons house and workshop were completely amazing. The woman who runs it knew Mr. Simmons and had stories unending about him and the larger community. I loved walking through this part of town and learning all the aspects of this part of the city and the history and legacy of the system of slavery.

Most interesting tour I’ve been on. Completely off the tourist track. See some of the real Charleston. it’s history in the slave trade and it’s people’s contributions to American society.

While the tour guide was entertaining, he had a habit of repeating the same information and in each telling, his facts contradicted a previous version. We were disappointed by the amount of non-ghost related information relayed and that there were only 2 stops on the tour - the alley and St. Phillips' Church. We were glad when it was over.
