The tour was a highlight of our three night visit. AlRay was outstanding for the entire 2.5 hour tour. Every question was answered with patience and deep level of detail. The speed was just right. We enjoyed it so much that we discussed taking the second garden tour that afternoon. For mid June the humidity was too much for us... More

The owner was our tour guide and he was fantastic. He said he had been doing tours for 35 years and that his groups were usually smaller which I confirmed as we passed other groups of 20+. He was very knowledgeable.

Michael, Thank you for the kind review! It is true that many guides prefer the canvass of a large group, but I prefer a more intimate group. For this reason many of my guests book me for Specialty Tours and Private Tours. So glad you enjoyed! Al More

Al was friendly and so knowledgeable. Before we got started from their headquarters (which had ac, and sells cool water, sun block, hats, books etc), he asked if our group had any particular interests so that he could customize our walk. He clearly enjoys sharing this fantastic town. He has historical pics that he shows along the way. Keeps you... More

Hi Karen, Thanks for the great review! I so relish the dynamics of a small group, and your input keeps it fresh for me. That's one reason I am popular as a private hire guide. On my daily scheduled tours my policy is to split my groups when they hit a threshold of 15 and bring in a second excellent... More

We booked a last minute tour there were only 7 of us. Al was a wonderfully entertaining guide As we were from Boston he kept reminding us that the south played a BIG part in the American Revolution Ha! We did learn quite a lot of the history of Charleston and we were very happy with the tour

Dear Arthur, Thanks for the great review! When I have guests from Boston or Philadelphia, I gear my tour to compare and contrast the growth and development of cities that were crucial to the formation of the early nation and our collective culture. (Boston, Charleston, Philadelphia). The Southern Campaign in the Revolutionary War was crucial to our independence, but has... More

Thanks Al for our walking tour of Charleston. So informative and interesting, we learned so much that we would have missed without a tour! Loved having a small group!

Hello Alysson, Thanks for the great review! I love to contrast the way New England and Carolina developed when I have true Yankees, I'm glad you enjoyed that! Small groups are important. I try to max my groups out at 12, 15 tops. Many guides routinely max out to 20. I think its important to keep my groups interactive, and... More

I've been on tours in some fantastic places....in the U.S. and abroad. Al Ray was one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I have ever had the pleasure to be with. His knowledge of Charleston is vast and almost overwhelming. His accuracy for dates/places is phenomenal. The fact that he is an actual Charlestonian and not some teenager working a... More

We arrived in Charleston for a long weekend and started with a Home and Garden Walk recommended by the concierge at our hotel (The Vendue) that included some history, architecture, and tours of 2 historical homes. We found that Al gave us a nice feel for the city as well as a good starting point. He is both knowledgable and... More

Al was a great contrast to the genteel southern lady guide to the same area that we had taken. Al knows all his dates and facts, but also some of the quirky anecdotes that make history so much fun. And he customized his tour to our interests (we happened to be the only ones that day) which was terrific. I... More

Thanks for the great review! Genteel southern ladies aren't inclined to discuss black history like I do. Charleston had a majority enslaved population from 1708 to 1865. There were more blacks than white in Charleston until 1980. To tell the city's history and not discuss African American history and culture, well, you are only telling HALF the story! More

We had a private tour with Al and saw some great sites and learned a lot about Charleston's history and neighborhoods. The tour really enriched our Charleston visit and I would highly recommend Al and his shop. Thanks again Al! Anne (from Boston) & Jamie (from NYC)!!!

Had a fun time learning about Charleston history with Al. Not the typical tour pointing out the dead plates in the window, and where George Washington is said to have slept. He combined a feel for the historic area past and present with a knowledge of the city and real world tie ins that made our experience one of the... More

Thank you for the great- and interesting- review. I am a lifelong Charlestonian and I have seen the city go from being the sleepy back water of my childhood to the world class community it has become. I suppose, in a way, I am now a part of the fabric and history of the city! More
