Stopped by here on our Two Sisters walking tour. Was interesting in its history, but I found the experience too touristy for a church. Lots of loud talking, including by the church employees on wholly irrelevant things. Seemed a little disrespectful for an active church.

Gothic Revival cathedral, rebuilt in 1907 on the site of the original one, burnt in 1861. There are four chapels here, three bronze bells, two one-of-a-kind Franz Mayer stained glass windows and one huge pipe organ. I was impressed by the stain glass windows, the nave and the carved oak pews. This cathedral and its spire can be seen from various parts of the city and up close has a presence. It is the seventh tallest building in Charleston.

Everything about this cathedral was awe-inspiring. Beautiful architecture, stained glass, etc. Recommend reading the Wikipedia info ahead of time to learn where the brownstone, wood for pews, etc. came from. That info is not inside as it is an active church. We quietly walked around as people were praying.

Take this as a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. The building is outstanding inside and out, but I would not think of it as a cathedral based on its size. There were less than a handful other visitors inside, so we had almost the whole space for ourselves. The light pours in from all sides through beautiful stained glass. Since it is conveniently located (it's not like you have to go out of your way to visit), I would include it in a walking tour of the historic district (it is nice to escape the hot summer temperature for air conditioned environment). We spent about 15 minutes observing and taking pictures, but without learning much about its history.

We happened to be near the cathedral so we decided to check it out. It was unbelievably gorgeous. We didn't attend a mass, just went based on others recommendations. As you can see, it was incredibly tall. The details inside were breathtaking and went clear up to the ceiling. Every window filled with gorgeous stained glass images. It was not crowded at all, maybe 3 others inside viewing, and a few people seated in the pews. Based on how few were inside and near it... I think most people overlook this beautiful sight on their trip, which is unfortunate.

This cathedral was beautiful and we were fortunate to be able to run in before the sign was up that a service was in session. The stained glass windows and the huge pipe organ were beautiful. I have to admit the inside walls & ceiling of my home parish church were more elaborate but this was still impressive. There were woman of the parish selling Christmas ornaments that pictured specific annunciations and events of the bible. They were very nice and I purchased a few for souvenir gifts.

Magnificent stain glass windows enclose a mesmerising and extremely grand building with an amazing ceiling. My wife and I visited Charleston as part of a cruise and really enjoyed our stop off in this moving church. A relatively easy walk from the cruise ship terminal and well worth the effort to get there.

A gorgeous cathedral and you can visit it and tour it. Don't go near noon as it will be closed for noon mass. At Christmas go and see the beautiful Christmas display. I especially enjoy when there is someone there to tell you about the history and changes in the Catholic church and meanings of the different things in the church.

Amazing architecture! Everywhere you look inside this church there is just one beautiful and amazing artifact after another. So grateful they allow people to experience the interior. Very moving. The exterior is amazing, as well. A “don’t miss” in Charleston.

We went to the Saturday, 5:30 mass while on vacation in Charleston, and we were welcomed by a parishioner who gave us some of the history of the parish. We definitely felt at home. Then after the mass we met another visiting couple as we were walking in the same direction and ended up going to dinner together. Very friendly experience.
