What a lovely slice of history. The church structure is beautiful and walking through the graveyard is so humbling. Many graves from the 1800’s and reading the stones, you realize how short most lives were in that time period.
So much to see and take in.

We were fortunate to arrive when a docent was hosting this historic church (started in 1712). The church is lovely, airy and attractive. We enjoyed our respite and the conversation with the hostess. Her presentation was sincere but she didn't have extensive knowledge of the church. It was lovely to look out the colonial windows at the graveyard among the trees and know that those who worship here are one with nature and the those who have gone before.

I could stay here to hours and just soak up the peace and quiet. Loved reading the headstone inscriptions. The history around the church is amazing. Thank you for sharing your place with visitors. And for the beautiful message on the sign.

Rating a church sure seems funny, because this is still a fully functioning, vibrant Episcopal Church. Keep that in mind if you are visiting during services. They are celebrating their 300th anniversary this year (formed in 1712). This may be the most historical church in South Carolina, if not the country. The cemetery alone if full of the rich history of Beaufort County's role in the founding and evolution of the United States. It contains British officers, colonials, as well as Civil War graves. It is worth spending a little time on the grounds of the church. It's not very far at all from Bay Street.

From the water, Beaufort's skyline is punctured by two elegant steeples, one of which belongs to the beautiful St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Established in 1712 (one year after Beaufort's founding date), this congregation is the oldest in the community and one of the oldest in America. The church has been renovated four times throughout the years and has a simple yet refined interior space that features a balcony area and a lovely alter.
For many though, the real interest is just outside the doors in the hauntingly beautiful churchyard. Surrounded by an ancient brick wall, the church yard features burial sites dating back to the Revolutionary War. You will see old tombstones and family plot sites along with immaculate landscaping and the occasional flag, signaling if a deceased was of the American, British, or Confederate forces. Legendary Southern names like Rhett, Barnwell, Heyward, and Elliott all were parishioners at St. Helena's.
The church hosts weekly organ concerts in the fall and a tour of homes in spring.

Take a moment to go back 300 years in history! This is a peaceful place for reflection and to see the wonderful ones who served our great country and built this beautiful town. The graves next to the church will give you pause and time to reflect on our wonderful heritage. What a treasure to have and be able to view in and out!

Historic markers give an overview of the church’s importance to the area. I enjoyed walking around the grounds. The surroundings are beautiful. Park on the street.

We were warmly welcomed by a knowledgeable docent. His narration of the church's history made it come alive. And this church has had an extraordinary history dating back to the Revolutionary War. Even if there is no docent on duty when you go walking around the grave yard gives you a feel for the history of the area

What union doctor used the church as a hospital during the civil war?
Written July 27, 2015
The Historic Beaufort Foundation Guide says only that "Federal troops adapted the church for use as a hospital, uprooting slabs from the graveyard for use as operating tables. The present altar was built and donated by the sailors of the U.S.S. New Hampshire stationed here during Reconstruction."
There is no mention of any Union doctor(s).
