About
Green Animals is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. This small country estate in Portsmouth was purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton, Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, Massachusetts. It consisted of seven acres of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden. Gardener Joseph Carreiro, superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945, and his son-in-law, George Mendonca, superintendent until 1985, were responsible for creating the topiaries. There are more than 80 pieces of topiary throughout the gardens, including animals and birds, geometric figures and ornamental designs, sculpted from California privet, yew, and English boxwood. Today, Green Animals remains as a rare example of a self-sufficient estate combining formal topiaries, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay.

Beautiful estate full of surprises. The topiaries and gardens are delightful. Dahlias and zinnias surprised us with their colorful blooms. At this time of year. The mums had tight blossoms so they will be beautiful in a few weeks. The fruit trees were full of rare hardy oranges. Pumpkins and gourds hung overhead vines. The topiaries were outstanding and the gardens were still beautiful and interesting. If you have visited the topiaries in MD at Ladew or Mr Pearl Fryer’s gardens in South Carolina, you will definitely enjoy this.

What an awesome garden to be able to wander through! We went in July and I was surprised at the amazing floral gardens in addition to the wooden sculptures (they were so cool) and the topiary exhibits. The grounds are flawless with something eye catching at every turn, it was such an adventure to tour this display. The grounds are amazing for kids to run around and enjoy all the displays - I can't wait to go back with my grandson!

Trouble is, when you complete the paper, there is no prize. No certificate, no mini-candy, no cheap toy. For the price of the tickets, they should do something to encourage parents to bring their children into the garden. My normally shy son “came alive” here, only to be let down. On a different note, the grounds were amazing, you can sit on rocking chairs on the porch of a farm house, the staff is great, the wooden insect exhibits incredible. A great compliment to Newport mansion tours.

For $20 per adult and $8 per child it was a little pricey for what it offers. We were there for an hour. It was really neat to see and they have beautiful sculptures and gardens but for $56 for a family of four, it was not worth the money.

The grounds were clean and the flowers were pretty. However, many of the topiaries were overgrown. The garden was much smaller than expected. The temporary bug exhibit was the best part of the trip. However, $20 was at least double what this 30 minute visit should have cost.

My husband and I visit the Green Animals Topiary Garden at least 3 times a year. The lady in the gift shop is very friendly and knowledgeable about the grounds.
The flower gardens are gorgeous and the bushes are shaped into animals (the bear is my favorite)this makes for a very relaxing and enjoyable visit looking at all the different rows of beauty. Each bush is perfectly groomed and look amazing and the flowers colors are radiant. Walk the grounds and you can also see the ocean and the historic house with some very cool old toys and furniture.

Newport is not the most kid-focused tourist destination, but our 7 year old daughter loved our visit to this nearby topiary garden. The bushes and trees carved into animal shapes were a huge hit, and she liked using the map to find and identify the various sculptures, from elephants to lions and peacocks and even a unicorn.

For adults, a visit might remind you of the Tim Burton classic film "Edward Scissorhands," and even if you don't get the reference, you'll still appreciate this lovely garden as a side trip from Newport.

Also, your admission ticket includes access to the grounds at the Breakers and the Elms in Newport. We went to the Breakers and enjoyed marveling at the architecture and gorgeous ocean views, before walking on a small section of the nearby Cliff Walk.

On a recent trip to Newport, I was looking for things to do other than the Gilded age mansions and I came across the Green Animals Topiary Garden. Green Animals Estate sits towards the end of a beautiful tree-lined road, so the drive itself was a treat! As we arrived, the first thing I noticed was the water.  The estate sits overlooking the Narragansett River, and the view is amazing!  It is very easy to see why Thomas Brayton chose that spot.  Everything is clearly marked, so it was easy to find our way to the admission area.  The woman that greeted us was fantastic, I wish that I would have been able to get her name.  She gave us several different knowledge nuggets about the estate.  There were two different options to tour the estate: one option was a guided tour of the Brayton house, which also included entrance to the gardens; or there was just the entrance to the gardens.  Since we were under a bit of a time constraint we opted for just the gardens. In an effort to see everything, I worked my way around the outside of the gardens, hugging the outer perimeter.  I found myself walking through beautifully sculpted doorways of greenery, into flower gardens, and vegetable gardens.  There were several areas with various flowers and veggies, it seemed like there was at least one of every type of flower in existence! One of the other touches that I thought was extremely poignant was the carved chair and the memorial bench.  Sitting on the large veranda, overlooking the Narragansett River, there is a memorial bench dedicated to George and Mary Mendonca.  I imagine that they enjoyed sitting out on the veranda enjoying the view.  The carved chair was not something that I had ever seen before, so I decided to sit and enjoy the day… and the view. All in all it was a great experience. So much so that I wrote an article about it. We will definitely be returning later this year.

My friends weren’t sure about visiting the topiary garden, but as I am an avid gardener, I talked them into it — by the time we left, they were glad we stopped here. While some of the animals were a little difficult to decipher, others were fantastic. The flowers were also quite beautiful. Definitely worth a visit!

Delightful experience walking thru the gardens. Amazing flowers and topiary animals. We brought a small picnic and sat in the porch facing the water.

Yes , tickets are $20 but this will give you three visits. This summer there are also large whimsical ᗷᑌᘜᔕ.

We will return!
