I heard about this hike on local pages and was expecting something more. It was nice, peaceful, but not more than 1/2 hour of time spent there.

A good-sized fracture in the shore rock near Second Beach in Middletown. Interesting view down into the chasm. Small parking lot (about enough for 8 cars), free. Worth a stop and walk around if you're in the neighborhood!

When I was a little girl we could jump the chasm and it continues to get wider. This is a great place to discover tectonic plate activity on Aquidneck Island!

If you’re in the area, stop by and snap a picture. It’s a tiny walk to the chasm, but there are some nice views of the ocean and clearings that are good for pictures. There’s a small parking lot that doesn’t charge to park in...More

This view is steps away from where you park. Very pretty views of a beach and the ocean. Watch out for small kids and anyone with mobility issues. It's a little rocky and you are on a cliff.

I found this while reading a book about weird places in New England. I live in Sutton MA and there is a purgatory chasm in this town. Weird that two places ~ 50 miles apart would have the same name.

Oh how I loved this place, you must be very careful and aware of your surroundings. As tree roots are exposed, wear sensible boots or sneakers with a a good grip the views are amazing. Unfortunately I did not have a lot of time to...More

i don't know if I'd go out of my way to find Purgatory Chasm. It's a small break between the rocks. It's a short walk from a very small parking lot. If your hotel is in Middletown, then I'd say take the ride down Purgatory...More

We took our young grandchildren to Purgatory Chasm and had an excellent day. Tough hiking and dangerous for the young children, so be heedful of that. Otherwise a nice day.

I really don't know where. We came from up above, but my guess would be maybe at Second Beach and then paddle you way in. It must connect to that water way. But the small portion that we saw from a walking bridge way... More
