Boyce is perfect for Learning. We did the tubes first time out (twice actually), then after that we worked on learning to snowboard.

I learned to ski at Seven springs as a thirty-something and would have far preferred to learn at Boyce. Not only is is much more affordable but a decreased risk of injury while one is learning. A lift ticket is $22 for an adult vs $80-ish for 7 Springs. So by the time you get to 7 Springs or wherever your ready to enjoy yourself and not just be terrified or worried about breaking yourself. So that you can do it safely.

This is the best little slope for learning to ski or board. Their instructors are really knowledgable and take their time with their students. We go every weekend in the winter that they're open. So happy to have this place as a close option.

The ski area is just a small part of Boyce Park. The Parks open for walking your dogs and exercise but ski areas still closed. I would suggest a nice walk and also visit the wave pool and log cabin areas in the summer season

Please start to sell tickets online. Nothing worse that arriving two hours before session time to find the next two sessions have been sold out. Half an hour drive and a disappointed seven year old. Please update your ticket system.

Problem 1: You cannot find the place with GPS if you enter "the Old Frankstown Rd" address that is found in their website because it is actually the address of the administration building not the address of the ski lodge. In order to find the ski lodge, you need to follow the "Ski Lodge" signs after exiting Highway 376. Otherwise you will get lost as we did :)

Problem 2: This place is really disorganized. There are lots different desks: one for snow tubing tickets, other one is for slope tickets, other one is for lesson registration and the other three desks are for rental equipment (include three different desks- one for skis&poles, one for boots and other one is for helmet and register for rental) :) When we got there, they had "Rental Equipment Sold Out" sign at the cashier but when we asked for size 7&9 boots at the boots desk, we noticed that they actually had skis and boots even though the sign. I think there is no communication between the desks. So, you should just go and ask if they have your sizes, do not get disappointed if you see the sign :)

Problem 3: Food is very bad. Bring your own food.

Other than these three problems, Boyce Park is an inexpensive place for ski, snowboarding and snow tubing place. I paid 20 for rental, 12 for snow tubing and 10 for one hour ski lesson. It is just 20 minutes drive from Pittsburgh downtown. Great for kids, beginners and even experienced skiers.

We went in March 2010.

I think this is a great place for families with young kids who want to try, practice and learn skiing Or for any first time skier who really doesn't want to commit to a huge ski trip first before finding out if they truly like to ski. My husband and youngest son went for the first time and really had fun. I watched at the bottom of the ski area which was nice for a non-skier. The pros really were just the fact that it was a non-threatening place to try skiing or to practice your skills. The cons were plentiful-the lodge was as in other reviews dirty and old. My husband had to wait with our son in line for 45 minutes to rent their equipment and when my husband asked for his size..they were out..fortunately he was able to get a size smaller and fit well enough to continue the trip. The best bet is having your own equipment, which we plan on doing the next time we go anywhere to ski. While they say there is more runs then their is...there really is only 4 "hills"..one that is for snow tubing, one for the beginner, one for intermediate and one a bit bigger then that...they are rather shorter hills too. This place is basically just a park that has a small ski area, so don't expect a TRUE ski experience that you would find in a resort.

In the end though, I would recommend this ski place to anyone who has kids and anyone who wants to try skiing without being intimidated by a HUGE resort. We will definitely go back, as its a non-committing way to ski without major commitment or costs. This place in comparison to huge resorts is very affordable for a day trip so we will visit again.

PS. SInce I do have allergies and one to wood burning...I was happy to see that the 2 fireplaces they DID have in the lodge we're not on the afternoon I was there....had they been going, I likely would have been stuck outside the whole time or in the worst case scenario would have had to leave or go sit in the car. They told me that the fire places aren't on all the time. For those of you who do like a roaring fire....there is a better chance of them being on at night or on very cold days. Though to be honest, the day we went was warm and since the building is not real clean and very old...would rather be outside anyways.

Boyce Park Ski Area, with a bunny slope, tube run and single chairlift leading to gentle downhills, is a perfect and reasonably priced ski area for families and new skiers looking for a nice easy day on the slopes.

The time me and my daughter had at Boyce park was simply perfect! Great slope for her age 9! We were able to ski and learn better control and turns and some jumps! Close to Pittsburgh! Tickets and rentals are affordable and the equipment is new! The cafeteria had amazing hand batter chicken tenders and their grilled burgers dog were huge, delicious and worth every penny! Wonderful customer service!

I took my 12 year old son and a couple friends here for an afternoon of snow tubing over the Christmas break. We didn't have to take a long drive to the mountains, and it was just the right size for them, since they had never gone before. The lodge was nice- they have a double sided fireplace for warming up. There is a nice concession stand with a good variety of food. The place is well kept. Sorry to say someone got hurt the day we were there, but I observed that the medical staff were quite impressive (if you're going to need that)! My son is just now getting interested in winter sports, and this is a great place to go, especially when you are first learning, and getting used to any of the sports that they offer - tubing, snowboarding (which we plan on trying next!), or skiing. It's big enough, but not too big. You can buy tickets a day in advance on their website, or just go and buy them there the same day. They do limit how many tickets are sold. (Note: you cannot buy the SAME day on the website)
