- Marilyn S101 contributionsNice place to shop, eat, relax. There is a nice mix of restaurants and shops in this area. We arrived mid-afternoon, grabbed a coffee at Starbucks and sat in the shade of a big tree at a little table and chairs set up and enjoyed watching the people. It was relaxing after walking all morning. We watched a family play a game of cornhole that was set up in the square.Visited June 2022Written June 10, 2022
- Michael B12 contributionsAbout what i expectedGreat food, some decent shops, lots of homeless people. The walk is nice as you can pick up the whole Boulder vibe. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and lots of shops. Not my cup of tea but my wife and daughter loved it.Visited June 2022Written June 12, 2022
- sullific701 contributionsWorth a LookI've been more impressed with other squares in other towns, but this isn't the worst you'll see. A couple of good restaurants (rest are chain restaurants). No worthy shops on the square, but a few adjacent. Saturday night there's a limited craft fair. Not in the greatest area but the crowds keep it pretty safe.Visited September 2022Written September 26, 2022
- ElvisAndrusArlington, Texas805 contributionsNowhere to sitWe were on a fanstatic three hour walking tour that ended here and we thought, wonderful- we can sit and figure out what to do next while we rested our feet. But unlike another review says, there were no tables or chairs. This was April 11 but it was nice out. I think there were two tables and five chairs in the whole square. Someone doesn't care. And, while lots of folks were milling about, noene was relaxing and taking it all in, because you couldn't. We ended up choosing a place right in front of us and sat inside as that was what was available and did fine but I want to give it one beause it wauld be so easy to correct.Visited April 2023Written May 1, 2023
- 5FamilyOfFive5Oak Lawn, Illinois22 contributionsSuch a disappointmentOh what a disappointment this was. We were there on a Sunday morning, all the coffee shops were closed, the only place that was opened was Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks. The Dunkin was extremely filthy, so we decided to enjoy our breakfast outside. Well, that wasn't a great option either. The place is filthy, and even though it's an outdoor space, it reeked. Many homeless people all around, the tables/chairs were filthy, so no place to sit down either. It must have been a nice place at some point, with all the 5 star reviews from 2-3 years ago.Visited May 2022Written September 12, 2022
- evangeline57Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania504 contributionsBathrooms in the AreaFor the sake of any out-of-town visitors, I just wanted to correct erroneous information regarding there being no Bathroom facilities in and around the Market Square area. In PPG's Food Court, on the Lower Level of PPG Tower #2, there is a large Public Restroom. This area is accessed off Market Square, directly across from Dunkin Donut, and is open Mon-Fri. There is another Public Restroom in the Food Court at 5th Ave Place, less than a block away from Market Square, which is open Mon-Sat. The Food Court is on the mezzanine level, up a short flight of stairs just off the 5th Ave entrance (where the big clock is located outdoors). A good thing to remember in any City is that most major hotels have Public Restrooms, usually on their ground flloors, and Pittsburgh is no different. If you are visiting the Downtown area, around Market Square, the Fairmont Hotel has a Public Restroom on the 2nd floor, just down the hall from their restaurant, "Habitat." Off course, the hotel is open at all hours, 7 days/week. If you find yourself having an emergency above Wood St, keep in mind that Macy's on Smithfield St at Fifth Ave has a Public Restroom on the 3rd Floor, right near their Garage Connector Entrance. Macy's is also open daily, but business hours pertain. I hope this information will be helpful.Visited May 2013Traveled with familyWritten May 13, 2013

The booths, lights, skating ring made it feel like Christmas. The main tree was gorgeous. Parking isn’t the best, so I would suggest walking if possible. This definitely put us in the Christmas spirit and we are glad we made it, even if it wasn’t for long.Visited November 2018Traveled with familyWritten December 11, 2018

Its a cool spot with some interesting restaurants and architecture, but am always underwhelmed. I was on a business trip and this was located near my hotel. I walked over and ate here several times. There was a nice variety of good restaurants and coffee shops. It all felt very safe, there was art in the middle square, and one day even a farmer’s market. It was just a nice place to eat, hang-out, and had a great local vibe.

Market Square is one of Pittsburgh's oldest Historic Landmarks, officially so designated since the 1970's, but actually having its origins two centuries earlier, c. 1770. In the ensuing centuries, there have been many uses of this area, including an open-air Market, a Public Meeting Place, enclosed Market House, Government Offices, Retail, Dining and Entertainment. Located on Market St, between Fifth, Forbes and Fourth Avenues, Market Square today is a good place to get your bearings on Downtown Pittsburgh, before commencing proper site-seeing. Just start with the North Star, the lighted inlay design at the center of the Square, memorializing the area's important role in the Nation's Underground Railway.
Around Market Square, you will find numerous shops, restaurants and bars in architecturally interesting buildings, some of them well over a hundred years old. You may like to stop into the "Original Oyster House", a casual locals spot, in continuance operation since 1871, or maybe sample the brew at the 4th generation "Nicholas Coffee". Perhaps you'd prefer a more contemporary and celebrated Pittsburgh Sandwich from "Primanti's Bros", a branch of which is also located here. Recent favorites include the popular "Diamond Market Grill", and "Wingharts," a Burger and Whiskey Bar. Other Dining Options include everything from fast food and early morning Breakfast places, to moderate and even upscale full-service Restaurants, as well as a Food Court on the lower level of PPG Place Building #2 (adjacent to Market Square, and Public Restrooms here).
There are many tables, shaded by colorful umbrellas, set out on the Square itself from early Spring to late Fall, where students, shoppers and Downtown workers congregate from early morning to late at night, enjoying-- al fresco-- their brown bag meals or purchases from the busy surrounding joints. From May thru October, there is often FREE Music in the Square at lunchtime, too (usually scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays, but other times as well. . . ).
On Tuesdays, they have a Partnership Program with Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh which includes a Story Hour, Used Book Sale, Librarian Discussion Program, and sometimes even a Cooking Demo if a Cookbook happens to be featured that week! Thursdays, Market Square reverts to its truest self, when the Downtown Farmers' Market sets up shop with numerous local vendors offering fresh Produce, Breads, Prepared Foods and other products to the rurally deprived city dwellers. Friday evening Happy Hour is from 5-8pm with Music, Dancing and Drink Specials in the Market Square Bars.
Special Events held here include the St Patrick's Day Street Party, which is for familes (i.e., "alcohol-free) before the Parade, and from 2pm-closing for adults only, featuring FREE entertainment and specials in all the Market Square Bars and Restaurants. This has also sometimes been the site of Zombie Fest in October, yearly Light-Up Weekend Festivities in mid-November, the European-Style Holiday Market through December, and First Night on New Year's Eve. At all of these, as well as other frequent open-air public gatherings, there is usually Music and tremendous people-watching opportunities.
Street Parking around the Market Square area itself is minimal, so many Visitors opt for Valet parking which is fairly reasonably priced @$5-$7.00-- check-in in front of "Diamond Market Grill", but they get some pretty mixed reviews. Parking Garages abound, however, and after 5pm, prices are usually @$5.00 flat rate for City Garages. (Also $5.00 during the days on weekends.) We usually park in the 6th St Garage at Ft Duquesne Blvd (across from the Byham Theatre), and walk the 2 short blocks to Market Square (Good location for PNC Park or PPG Plaza Parking , too). Or, you can always take the "T" to Gateway Station and cross Stanwix St, then take a right onto Market St. Enjoy your visit to Market Square!

Very disappointing. We were here a few years ago and it had a very different vibe. When we visited this time it was dirty and aggressive homeless panhandlers everywhere. There was an encampment of one group setup in the square blaring inappropriate fowl lyric music. There seemed to be some abandoned buildings next to a Starbucks we went into where it smelled of urine. My wife, children and I did not feel safe there and saw no police presence. We felt unsafe throughout Downtown Pittsburgh for many reasons and hopefully the city figures it out soon.

Hi. Best to check google maps first to get an idea of distance. Not sure which double tree you plan to stay in. What I usually do is check google maps and then ask the hotel concierge for suggestions to get there.

It is about a 20 minute walk, but sidewalks everywhere. It is near the Consol Center where the Penguins play, an area that is being developed and might be a tad dicey at night.
