About
Opened in 1955, Mellon Square is Downtown Pittsburgh’s emerald oasis. The first modern garden plaza to be built atop a parking garage, Mellon Square’s design makes it a forerunner of today’s rooftop gardens. Covering 1.37 acres, Mellon Square's significant landscape and Modernist design has brought liveliness and beauty to downtown Pittsburgh for almost 60 years. The park remained a vital spot for downtown’s workforce and an increasing number of residents, but began to show signs of deterioration around the turn of the 20th century. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, with funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, The Colcom Foundation, The Eden Hall Foundation, BNY Mellon and a mix of corporate and private sponsors coordinated efforts to restore Mellon Square Park. Now that magnificent space has been brought back to life through a $10 million makeover -- and new features have been added, including an elevated terrace. The refreshed Mellon Square Park, reopened publicly on May 29th, 2014, offers a tranquil oasis in the heart of the Pittsburgh’s downtown corridor -- a place to enjoy the sparkling fountains and rhythmic splashing of water.

Didn't see the park coz it's winter ,but I did park in the underground garage. When my 90 year old father made a mistake with his ticket I needed to go to the attendant to straighten things out. She explained twice what he did wrong, and then she started lecturing me on the correct procedure. When I said that I understood she repeated the explanation. When I cut her off and said "I understood you the first time AND the second time" she started to explain it a third time. Wotta jerk.

This square was right across from my hotel. It’s a small square. It felt safe. It’s not a big park or anything really exciting. But green space is nice.

I stayed across the street at the Omni William Penn and that’s the only reason why I saw Mellon Square. It was not the cleanest, not the best in terms of being kept up and a lot of concrete making the Square look dingy and not the most inviting. Also, it’s the topper to a parking garage, so it’s not exactly touristy. Just keep in mind that Mellon Square is not the park to check out while in Pittsburgh.

Mellon Square is a glorious, vibrant square in the center of downtown Pittsburgh. It manages to be verdant, clean, peaceful, and fun all at once. We stayed at a hotel on Mellon Square and both of us and I kids liked walking through and playing in the square. Being surrounded by the Alcoa Building, the Embassy Suites, and the William Penn Hotel gave me a sense of comfort whenever we were there.
That Mellon Square is actually the cap of an underground parking garage makes it more interesting. Mellon Square's history as a partnership between the Mellon family & businesses and the City of Pittsburgh is also fascinating.. I can understand why Jane Jacobs praised Mellon Square as a rare success of government/foundation urban renewal.

Decrepit garage with a horrible valet attendant, Ed (bald man with glasses working the main floor). After I spent 40 minutes circling the garage looking for a spot and went to talk to him, he was incredibly rude and disrespectful, mockingly claiming that I just "couldn't find" the remaining spots left in the garage. There clearly were none, and I had to waste my time circling the crumbling garage to look for a nonexistent spot. This man should be fired. End of story. Go down the street to the Oliver Street garage where you'll find plentiful parking in a clean, well lit, well maintained space. Skip the substandard garage that tries to oversell spots with the attitudinal, rude employees, even if you are staying at the William Penn (like we were) right across the street.

We could see this small, pretty i.5 acre Park, with the water features, from our high floor room at the Embassy Suites directly across the street. It looked peaceful, and we just had to check it out. So, one morning during our stay, we climbed up those stairs, strolled around for a bit, took a bunch of photos and then continued on our way.
The unusual thing about this park is that it is built on the roof top of a parking garage, and provides a different and interesting view from the tall buildings surrounding it.
What a nice way to create a soothing relaxing place for the stressed out office workers all around who can come here to enjoy a bagged lunch, read, relax, walk about or just people-watch.
Worth a short visit.

Very nice park, especially at lunch for those working in the city. However, the last time I had the opportunity to pass through, it appeared as though they may be renovating??? The fountains were not on and appeared they had not been so for quite some time. Great lunch time concerts and they did have a small farmers market and a few food booths. I am hopeful the fountains will be back soon!

I love this little park. It's right across from the Omni, which is were I go to a conference every year. I take my breaks here when I can and at least one quick lunch when I feel like a little peace and quiet after a droning lecture.
It is disappointing that it always seems like it's under construction in some form or another. The fountain is only operational every other year. At least it seems that way.
Take your lunch and enjoy the pigeons flying over head.
