About
Elmwood Park Zoo was established in 1924 when a local farmer transferred 16 acres and a small menagerie to the Borough of Norristown. Today, the zoo is owned and operated by the Norristown Zoological Society, a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster an appreciation of wildlife and their habitat that will inspire active participation in conservation. Under the Society's careful management, Elmwood Park Zoo has attained the elite status as one of only 225 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo's accreditation was renewed in September, 2016. Elmwood Park Zoo currently maintains a collection of dozens of species that hail from all over the globe. Highlights of the collection include red pandas, jaguars, bald and golden eagles, giraffes, zebras, elk, and more. A number of animals in the collection are managed pursuant to an international SSP (Species Survival Plan), representing threatened and endangered species.

Third Generation

I visited this zoo as a young child. In turn I bought my children and now my grandchildren. This zoo is just perfect for those with young children. The little ones can see animals up close and feeding the giraffes is always a highlight. I can't give this little, local zoo a high enough rating. I
hope it's around for my great grandchildren to visit as well.

Delightful for the close up of animals, and holiday lights
Dec 2020 • Couples
We bought our timed ticket for a daytime visit online and tho it was quite cold with snow on the ground, the close up views of the animals warmed our hearts. An easy to walk venue with inside and outside glimpses of some animals - we adored the red panda ( I hadn’t seen one since my last visit to Chengdu, China. And at the large panda park they roamed freely despite a sign that said they were ferocious!). I only wish the Elmwood Park Zoo had a friend for this dear red panda. That said, we saw 7 eagles in their outside enclosure. There was an ocelot, a beige jaguar, an otter playing with a snow ball, bison, giraffe, alligator etc.
The gift ship had a wide selection of stuffed animals, puzzles all reasonably priced.

On a Sunday at 3:00 PM there were not a lot of people. This zoo is a hidden gem !

A Great Local Zoo!
Jul 2019
This small zoo has many wonderful animals & attractions. I like this zoo for small children especially, since you can usually look at everything in less than 2 hours and let your kids play on the playground. They have an adventure/climbing area for older kids too. We enjoy all the animal exhibits, plus the rides like the carousel. A must-see if you are in the area!

One tip I have is arrive early--before the park opens. The parking area is small so you won't get a good parking spot if you arrive late.

Nice Small Zoo
Dec 2019
Is this zoo as large as Philadelphia Zoo? No... but it is a small, charming zoo in a suburb. I find that pretty cool. I have been visiting for years- with my niece and nephew when they were younger and even visits alone.

You don't need a ton of time to visit this zoo, but you can make it a longer visit if you'd like (I have done it on many occasions). I like to spend time observing the animals and exhibits and sometimes participate in the "extra" activities (like bison & giraffe feedings!)

Great Local Experience
Dec 2019 • Family
It was a beautiful local experience. The Frozen Show was just enough for the little one. The well decorated Christmas Tree was nice as well and the screens with the caroling the Elmwood Park Zoo way was creative as well.

Nice friendly staff and nicely lighted areas to captivate the children and even the adults as well. We had a good time and we were happy with the overall experience.

Very Small
Oct 2019
This place is very small. Might be good for small kids who can't get through a whole day at a big zoo. Not impressed.

Frost Sampling Series at Wild Lights
Dec 2019 • Couples
Let me start by saying that we have been to other events at the zoo and they have been wonderful. For this event we paid $40 per person and it was the worst sampling event I’ve ever been to. There were literally five vendors giving samples of their products. The Tannery Run Brew Works beer and people were awesome. They had two beers to choose from and gave you a full glass. The A’Dello Vineyard was there also. They had plenty of choices but gave you about a tablespoon of wine at a time. See photo. Those are 1 oz plastic shot glasses. Also young children were allowed to be in the tented area and since it was a dirt floor they were kicking up dirt and dust into the air all evening and it was getting into the beverages.
