Have been here years ago and have now returned. A big change and not for the better. Fewer stores now with more empty spots. Decent food court. Outer buildings better than in the past. Good selection of stores. Still better than many malls which are near closed or are closed. Adequate parking. Will return.

I was around when the mall first opened. Although it doesn't have a nice skating rink with a restaurant next door, there are a few gems.
It is still nice to go there for a haircut, a facial, a movie, a massage, clothes or jewelry and it is nice to have a Barnes and Nobles nearby.
However, with that said, I rarely go the the mall at night anymore. You have to be aware of your surroundings.
I would hate this to become just another "Ghostown Mall".

The Monroeville mall has many vacant stores and was not very busy. The shops left look ok . It looks like the these days people shop elsewhere

I like this mall. Good variety and the glass elevator is pretty cool. It's a Westinghouse from 1984 and it has a unique shape of glass back. Back in '84, this was to emulate a telephone pole and replaced an ice-skating rink. This mall is also famous for its role in the 1978 film "Dawn of the Dead" My only complaint: no photography or videography without management approval per rule #23 on the Behavioral Code of Conduct. Other than that, this famous mall is AWESOME to hang out in

As a longtime fan of George A Romero films, I have visited Pittsburgh PA several times now. Any fans like me will understand why many of us flock to Pittsburgh from all over the world.
The Monroeville mall, which was featured as the primary location for the protagonists in Dawn of the Dead, George Romero's 1978 classic horror film, understandably is a very popular destination for fans like me. While it was nice when I first visited over 10 years ago when many of the locations in the mall were still recognizable from the movie, the Monroville Mall has since over the years dismantled and remodeled most of the locations rendering them nearly unrecognizable to anyone other than the most rabid fans. The JcPenneys store which had been prominently utilized as a major set location in the film, for example,. was razed and a multiplex put in it's place for example. The fountains from the film, the clock tower, and other locations are now gone. To be honest the mall seems to have done very little to honor or exploit its association with the film, save for a small plaque and a few photos on a wall on the ground floor that announces that it was used in the film as a location.
This all being said, for the obsessive and rabid fans of Romero's Dawn of the Dead like me there is still enough in the mall that appeals enough to us to warrant making the pilgrimage whenever we can. And for us fans there are a number of locations in the area of Pittsburgh and Evans City to keep us happy.
I give the mall 3 stars - would have been higher for me if the mall treated it's association with the film and the fans of the film with a little more respect. Monroeville mall security, for example, have been for the most part notoriously uncooperative and unfriendly in the past towards fans of the film. Do not let them see you taking photos - you will be removed from property and told to not come back.

Its in this mall they filmed the movie dawn of the dead, a George Remaro zombie film. Just to be in it is great but a lot has changed but still worth the trip

Multiple violent incidents have caused me to tell my family to not go to this mall. I was there just before the fights broke out that put it on national news. Security was doing nothing. A few weeks later there was a shooting near the children's play area.

There are still a few good store left here but it seems to be following all the other malls in this area. People just do t seem to shop malls any more and the are dying off.
