    Incredible Murals With Robust History
Outstanding murals located on a hill overlooking the city with unique views. The murals themselves are breathtaking and well maintained. You can schedule private tours or attend open tours, the docents are extremely knowledgeable about the history surrounding the murals.

Small Church Has a Big Story to Tell
Located in the outskirts of Pittsburgh you will find the St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church. From the outside the building is quite unassuming. It's a small neighborhood church, smaller than then the parish church in the neighborhood I grew up in. Step inside however, and you will behold incredible murals painted by a man, I had never heard of until the visit here. The murals are incredible in detail and in the stories they tell. This is a MUST visit when you are in the Pittsburgh area, and you don't have to spend a great deal of time here. There are Saturday tours. Call ahead and check on availability. The tours last about an hour but you can stay as long as you like. This was a hidden gem and a remarkable experience that was completed unexpected.

    Excellent experience
Bringing out of town family here was a stroke of genius! They loved the docent tour on Saturday morning. Such beautiful murals and a unique story behind them. You will learn about the artist, the Croatian community in Pittsburgh, and the stories behind some of the most interesting murals I've ever seen in an urban, church setting. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to have a fun and unusual experience in Pittsburgh that is off the "common path" for visitors.

The small group escorted tour was a revelation. The dedicated docents presented a heartfelt and honest explanation of the church, the artist and the murals, readily admitting the gaps in the story of this microcosm of America’s immigrant experience and the real effects of war on people across the globe. The story of the murals, with their social, cultural and religious commentary, is far more than a visual experience, and the efforts of the community to preserve and expand their exposure is testament to the lasting impact of Vanko’s art. A truly unique Pittsburgh attraction.

I loved every minute of it. The photos I saw of the murals before my tour did not do them justice. They must be seen in person and they are magnificent. This is one of those cool gems that makes Pittsburgh such an interesting place. These are a MUST SEE.

Maxo Vanka's murals, which decorate St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Millvale, are definitely worth a visit. Docent-led tours are offered on Saturdays from 11:00 - 1:00, but it is possible to see them at other times, if you call and make arrangements. Vanka's work is stunning in the way that he uses religious iconography to send a very political message. Although he painted the murals in the late 30s and early 40s, the murals still resonate today. They are stark and compelling, and definitely worth a trip up the hillside.

On a girlfriend's trip to Pittsburgh to celebrate a 50th Brithday, our lively group of 5 decided to take in the Millvale murals of Maxo Vanka as an item of unique interest in our diverse weekend of activities. Knowing nothing of the artist or church, none of us of the Catholic faith, but having received a tip from another who had visited, we placed it on our agenda and it proved to be a worthwhile and very interesting stop. It's free (although any donations are appreciated and used in preservation of the murals) and takes no more than an hour to obtain some good insight into the art which adorns St. Nicholas Croation Catholic Church. It was interesting to contemplate the artist's renderings and see the ironies between his homeland of Croatia and his life in the new world as depicted through his art. I would endorse this fully for those with any art interests and also for those desiring to add something unique to their agenda - a great piece of Pittsburgh's culture!

Definitely the highlight my trip to Pittsburgh, besides visiting family. I also visited the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Mattress Factory, but this was a real buried treasure. The strength, beauty and messages in these murals really do correspond to the murals of the Mexican muralists Rivera and Orozco. I loved the setting and the feeling of history being in the church. It conveys the spirit of a unique community, honoring their religion, their labor, the immigrant experience and the rejection of war and capitalist greed. The murals were painted at the end of the depression and the beginning of WWII and the artist has responded with passion to those difficult times.

These murals need attention, because the small parish church struggles to maintain them, but what an amazing achievement. These murals combine modern and historical in terms of terms of style, technique and subject. Should be high on anyone's list who cares about art history.

The only murals of which I am aware that come anywhere close to Maxo
Vanka's in terms of artistic brilliance and emotional intensity are those of
Diego Rivera. They are truly one of Pittsburgh's neglected masterpieces.

Others have noted that this is indeed worth your time; there's nothing new I can add. However, let me comment about signage: yes, it's tricky to get to the church. Things would be FAR much easier if the church would invest in better signage. Have they tried to work with Millvale to get a distinctive sign, right off the highway ramps, pointing in the right direction? I've seen distinctive signs in many places, and they are a tremendous help. I came in Rt. 28 South. At the very end of the ramp, I was looking at the church, up a hill, but didn't realize this was the right church. Yet, they have a very prominent electronic sign, easily seen from the exit ramp. Why doesn't this sign say "home of the famous murals?" Now, if I was coming in from Rt. 28 North (from Pittsburgh) I can see how even seeing the church would be more difficult. I personally would pass the Millvale exit, go further, take the next exit, turn around, and then get back on Rt. 28 South and come in that way. But you still need to pay close attention to the website's directions. As you are climbing the little hill to get to the church, it's narrow. Suddenly the church is on your right. As many have noted, it looks far bigger than it really is. On the side of the church, where it states that it's an historic landmark another distinctive marker could be placed. At the very least, a distinctive marker/sign could be placed on the sidewalk. We were clueless where to park, so decided to leave the car right across the street; it appeared that convent was no longer in use. So here, again, is where signage is needed. Incidentally, when getting out of the car, there is a sizeable hilly road right beside; if you're out of town: welcome to hilly Pittsburgh! Finally, prominent signage needs to be right at the door of the church. And it also wouldn't hurt to get directions for how to leave, or you could be driving around Millvale (which has seen better days so eventually you'll find Rt. 28 again). Bottom line: pollute the area with distinctive signs. You can never have enough signs. If you want people to come, they have to know how to get there, without getting so aggravated they merely say "to heck with it." These murals need to be seen. Better signage would, in my opinion, definitely encourage more people to make the attempt. It will be a win-win action.

As noted by other reviewers, this church has a series of outstanding murals painted many decades ago by Maxo Vanka. The murals reflect Mr. Vanka's Catholic faith, his Croatian heritage, and his anti-war and anti-industrial views. They are very thought-provoking, and can be appreciated by non-Catholics and those that do not share Mr. Vanka's political views.

I had seen a TV special that included a few minutes of coverage about the murals. Given the number of murals that were shown, I erroneously concluded that St. Nicholas must be a very large church. In fact, it is a very small church, and a substantial portion of the sanctuary walls contain murals. Unfortunately, some of the paintings were damaged when the remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused serious destruction in the Pittsburgh area 11 years ago. Restoration work has been going on for years to remedy the situation, and most of the damage seemed to be fixed.

The paintings are often jarring, particularly when it comes to the images of death from war and industrial accidents. The church has a website where you can see many of the murals:

http://www.vankamurals.org/millvale_murals/index.html

I went on a tour with a docent who was a member of the church, and he went from painting to painting, describing the background story of each one. Because the church is not that big, it was not necessary to move around very much inside the sanctuary during the tour, so even individuals with somewhat limited mobility could still enjoy a visit there.

With respect to finding the church, the problem is that it sits right on Route 28, which is a busy highway that runs to downtown Pittsburgh. The church is on Maryland Avenue, which runs off of East Ohio Street and right up beside Route 28 - it looks like an entrance ramp. However, the actual entrance ramp to Route 28 is further down the road. The church website has a photo of what the turn onto Maryland Avenue looks like, and the church's directions should be followed by anyone planning to go there:
