About
LumberjAxes is Pittsburgh’s first competitive axe-throwing venue. Yes, competitive axe- throwing is a thing. It’s huge in Canada. At our rustic warehouse in Millvale, adults of all skill levels can try their hand at it. You and your friends, coworkers, or wedding party get a lane and take turns throwing at a target. It’s sort of like bowling, but without the silly shoes. And with way more axes.

We had a group of 6 couples book an hour of Curling. I booked the group online and we ended up having more people than we'd booked. Patrick (the manager) helped to accommodate us and was really helpful!

Booking ahead and paying the required deposit did cause some confusion and hassle, though. We paid the required deposit and assumed that people would just pay the difference when we arrived based on what they'd contributed earlier. That wasn't the case. It wasn't clear that the deposit would be applied to 3 individuals instead of being able to split up the deposit they way we collected it (per couple). The night of our group, the staff member I worked with while checking us in was dismissive of my questions, blamed me for making it too difficult and just wanted to charge us all the same amount. I was concerned that some people had already paid a portion of their amount and would be over charged. That ended up happening and we are left to sort it out among ourselves. Having some flexibility in how they apply the deposit - OR very clearly stating that online would be helpful.

After that debacle, the actual activity of curling was a LOT of fun. We thought it was a bit pricey for all the more time you actually get to curl, but we had a really good time none-the-less.

Our family of 5, ranging in age from 20 to 56, laughed, threw, laughed some more and came away with a new skill - axe throwing. Who knew throwing axes could be so much fun? Of course, you have to be OK with your loved ones laughing at you as your axe bounces off the wall way too many times. And, you have to be able to laugh at yourself. If you can do that and follow the instructor's direction, you'll get there - maybe not a bulls eye, but at least your axe sticking into the wood wall instead of ending up on the floor. I recommend this experience!

Well organized. The instructor was superb.
The only advise we will give to help Lumberjacks with continual improvement is to find a way to offer tavern food and snacks. Waiting for pizza delivery is not the best.

Also one instructor and one throwing space is insufficient for 12 as most of the time folks spent standing around.
If you have a group of more than 6 throwers make two different reservations - both for 6.

We went for a 6:15pm slot last Saturday with 12 people to curl. We were there for a birthday this time, and we had all thrown axes at this venue at least two times, some people more than three. Axe throwing was always well-organized, efficient, and fun. While I understand curling is a new addition to Lumberjaxes, my entire party was let down by the experience. All 12 of our party arrived at 6pm. The sign in process was messy and inefficient this time; I put down the deposit on my credit card and was told to visually "point out" the other people on my deposit (4). Eight people paid cash. This was problematic, as the employees checking us in put the cash deposits under the wrong name. When I went to square up at the end of the night just to double-check we were all good, I was told I still owed $180. As an anxious person, this was not good news. I went to my group and every person swore an oath that they paid, all of them in cash. The employee I spoke with was a manager, and explained that maybe there was a mistake when they changed managerial shifts with people paying cash, and cash being hard ot track. Umm. What?

Secondly, for $30 you get to curl for 50 minutes. Okay, fine. We were all there 15 minutes early at 6pm for a 6:15pm time slot, paid, and were drinking at bar. No one approached us to tell us what to expect, where we should be, or when we would begin. Finally, at 6:30 I found an employee (Mike) who said, "Oh yeah, we'll get you started." Okaaaaaaay.

Unlike Axe Throwing, curling requires that the player keep track of the rounds and the games. Instead of a designated employee per lane, there are 2 people working 4 lanes at a time. We were told there would be at tournament at the end, Most groups played Round Robin but weren't keeping track of rounds. Dan and Mike were pleasant enough with shouting out scores, but we did not begin until 6:37. There was a rushed "tournament" at the end that just had all 4 lanes throw for the best score. I guess we were disappointed, because with axe throwing, there is a real tournament with knock out rounds, etc. Dan and Mike gathered us together at the end and we walked off the ice at 7:18.

For $30 per person, we expected A. to curl for the full time, not 41 minutes, B. better organization to sign in, and C. some time of leadership or score keeping, D. if our time slot is 6:15, start at 6:15. We had to call our dinner reservations (7:45) and ask them to move the time back (8:00) so we could make our birthday meal.

As people who enjoyed the axe throwing experience, Lumberjaxes either needs to knock down the price of curling or extend the time window to play. All 12 people said they liked curling itself, but they'd "never do it again here."

Sorry Lumberjaxes, but this was a fail.

We reserved curling for a group of 8. It exceeded everyone's expectations with how fun it was!! The coaches were nice, and the games were easy to understand (especially with them yelling the score back to us). We were able to enjoy a few adult beverages while playing, and everyone had such a great time. We will 100% come back. We even stayed for a little extra axe throwing, which we did not reserve ahead of time. They were very accomadating and helpful with throwing. Our group also brought in some Iron Born pizza....highly recommend this pairing. Great people, Great Times!!

We had a fun time at a friend’s 60th birthday party. Each cubicle has a coach guiding you and giving you tips the whole time. They were all energetic and made the experience fun. You can bring your own food and there is a cash bar. Our only complaint was the game played for this particular party. I am sure there are other options for games but we played “tournament” style. I went quite far in the competition but my husband lost in the first round and sat and watched for the rest of the tournament, about 1 1/2 hours out of a 2 hour party and he wasn’t the only one sitting there. It was expensive to throw for 10 minutes and then sit and watch. Anyone can do this. I was hesitant because I had rotator cuff surgery years ago on one shoulder and need it on the other shoulder. But I was able to throw 2 handed and beat several others throughout the tournament. Beginners luck? Try it. I can’t wait to go back. $20 walk-in or $35 for a reservation pp.

Of course it was so much fun but our group guide “G” was the best. She enabled our group to really enjoy ourselves and her guidance allowed us to perform better than expected. This place is the best of all axe throwing places I have been to with spacious space great employees a bar and just plain fun.

Jeremiah was an excellent host. He was patient w us as we were all novices. He was able to teach all of us & everyone hit bullseyes under his direction. The place was clean, the bar was stocked and the music was groovin! It was a fun night had by all and we will definitely return!

While it was fun, I’m leaving a 1 star review based on COVID safety at this place. A staff member was not wearing his mask when he came to instruct us. Most employees did wear masks, however, most clients did not at all. When entering, when walking around, never. The staff did not seem to care and did not try to enforce any of their Covid related protocols. Will not be returning and I’d advise any reasonable person who believes in science not to at this time as well

This place was awesome. I didn't really think throwing an axe could be so much fun, but here we are. You have an expert with you at all times, and he shows you how to play the game and gives you recommendations on how to improve your throw. He also keeps score. We had Ben, and he was very into helping us all up our games! Most of us had never done it before, and a few of us were nervous, but he was amazing.
We did curling there as well, and had Dan as our score keeper and trainer, and that was also a lot of fun and something you don't get to do every day! Dan was a lot of fun as well.
The guys that worked there really made it that much more fun!
