We knew next to nothing about the home before visiting. We are so glad we took the time to visit. The docent was gracious and well versed in the history of the place. Although many pieces were not owned by Adj. General Hand, records from the estate were consulted to recreate what was originally there. Hours are somewhat limited in... More

The visitor's center down town Lancaster suggested we visit the Rock Ford Plantation which was the house of Edward Hand. I did not remember that name in any of my history calsses. I was very glad that we visited the Plantation. The home has remained almost untouched since 1800 and retains it origonal beauty. Most of the home has been... More

This plantation is a popular venue for weddings, because not only is it understated elegance and history, but a perfect example of architecture for its time period. Once, when I visited, there was a whole herd of deer grazing on the lawn! The only problem is that it's only open during certain hours, so make sure you explore the website... More

We went at 10:15 but a sign on the door said opening at 11. Can't speak to the door. Grounds were nice but actually a little glad I didn't have to pay $8 to see the house interior.

Thank you for your Trip Advisor review. We wanted to clarify about the time of "11:00" posted on the door. The Rock Ford mansion is open for tours from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. As posted on our website, on the door, and the standing sign by the door, tours begin promptly on the hour. Since you arrived at 10:15,... More

My previous review stated that the captions on the Wiki page were reversed. This has now been corrected. The parking lot is at the rear of the house so you approach from there. If you drive up from the Conestoga River, you look at the front. The confusion was understandable. Still, quite a gem.

Thank you for noting this correction as to Rock Ford's parking lot location and the today's entrance for visitors into General Hand's home. More

The plantation itself is nicely kept, excellent staff and it should be on the history buff's visit list. That said, there's not much there of interest unless you like that type of American history information.

Highly knowledgable and personable docents relate very interesting stories and point out fun details as you tour an 18th century home that is in remarkably good condition. Absolutely worth a visit.

We never heard of this site until we got to Lancaster. We took a cab to and from and caught the last tour of the day. We really liked it. The grounds were beautiful and the house really something to see.
