A unique gallery of over 350 sandstone carvings plus murals painted on the sandstone walls in the sandstone level above the opal level of an old opal mine. Ron Canlin is the artist of this amazing attraction, 12 years passion and still carving daily, a real work in progress. After touring the carvings, Trevor Hudson with 30 years experience in mining and prospecting then takes you down to 2nd level where he will draw on his wealth of knowledge to give you a very informative talk on the geology and formation of opal, the drives and shafts were hand dug by the old timers over the past 100 years. Not to be missed, winner of the NSW 2008 Hidden Jewel award.

Fabulous by any standards. I took my 6 year old grandson down with me and he was gobsmacked to use his words. He stayed down for an hour. 82 steps down and up but not hard to negotiates as they are about 45 degrees. Don't go to The Ridge without seeing this.

The Chambers of The Black Hand is a must see if you are visiting Lighting Ridge. It is unbelievable what one man has done to the walls of this opal claim.

While in Lightning Ridge do not miss a tour of the Chambers of the Black Hand. This is one of the most interesting places I have seen in quite a while. The sculptures underground are amazing, one man's work that is a beauty to see. The tour guide was fabulous, a miner who really gave an excellent tour for us.... More

Most Lightning Ridge attractions come with a hefty price tag but this is well worth bugetting for. That one person could create all of these carvings with no formal training is mind-blowing. Bus will pick you up from your accommodation.

Awesome to see. Kids loved it and the map was helpful as your free to roam around the passages at your leisured About 2 storeys underground and nice and cool. A must do if you make it to the ridge to see the hours that have gone into these sculptures.

Fantastic display of carvings and artistry. Well worth doing the mine tour to hear the history of mining in the region, very informative guide and staff to answer any questions. Even the kids enjoyed it!
