About
The Journey... The Lighthouse Trail Byron Bay takes you on a hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse. The Experience... En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Remember to keep an eye out on the water for turtles, dolphins, stingrays and, in season, whales. The Rewards... You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the Cape Byron walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, so don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it all again. In fact, it’s one of the most rewarding ways to spend a couple of hours on the state’s entire coast.

The trails to the lighthouse and return are in excellent condition. There are places along the way for rests. Signs are well placed with interesting information. We were lucky to have seen dolphins. You do need a good level of fitness or else park your car up top (cost of approx $8- for an hour) to take advantage of the views and to see the lighthouse.

I walked the full circuit of the lighthouse track from Byron Bay town centre in around 2 1/2 hours during the cool of the morning. The first section from the surf club was along the beach, then along the rear of the beach, as Clarke’s Beach had almost disappeared at high tide. I then turned uphill from Captain Cook’s lookout, winding through the rainforest as the track gained elevation up a series of stairs. At the top, there were great views to the south as the track followed the ridge tops to the hang glider launch platform near the lighthouse road. Then followed the last section of the lighthouse road to the top along the well paved and separated footpath. The 360 degree views from the lighthouse lookout is worth the walk on its own. I then descended towards the east, down almost to the water, where the well constructed path leads back around the coastline past Wategos Beach and Palm Valley, where you can get a coffee or cold drink from Rae’s. I continued back around the coastline and back into the town centre. All up, a 2 1/2 hour round trip, with plenty of stops to enjoy the sights along the way. I saw some interesting sections of coastal rainforest in the more protected areas, as well as a number of scrub turkeys, including two nesting mounds.
If you are not inclined to walk the full circuit, you can park at various locations on the way (for a fee), even driving right to the lighthouse!

Watched the sunrise at the easterly part then walked up to the light house. The views were awesome & the trials with signs were super easy to follow.
The only downfall was some of the trial was a bit steep so be prepared for your legs to burn.
Definitely something you need to do while in Byron.

The lighthouse rail was amazing. The track is not too hard to walk on. There were steep steps but nothing too difficult for me and my girlfriends. There's no need to wear trainer shoes as one of us only wore thongs. I did still wore trainers as I read other reviews that says you should. If you're just sightseeing and taking pictures then no need ot wear trainers. If you're climbing up here to have a bit of a jog/cardio then by all means wear shoes.
The weather was a bit rainy when we got there which made it interesting. It's exhilirating to see water pouring down from afar. If you're visiting Byron Bay, this is a must-see.

It you want to get a glorious view of the beaches and surroundings of Byron’s Bay, this 1-2 hour trail is for you. Only strenuous in a few areas. People were running on the trail and many folks of all ages were hiking. Plenty of benches along the way if you want to rest. It’s a loop; you can’t get lost.

The trail has an obvious trailhead at a parking lot. If you start at the town center, you can walk the entire length of the beach to find the parking lot.

Wonderful place to visit. Markets on Thursday and Saturday. Many creative and talented people making all sorts of craft's and healthy tonics to buy. A swim in the clear blue waters 💧. Magical experience.

This track is not difficult, you can take your time and soak up the views. People also go running up and down this trail. When you get to the top, the view is amazing and you might be lucky to see whales jumping out of the water during migration season. It's just mesmerising! Recommend wearing runners so more comfortable.

Worth starting early in the morning from Wategos as you might catch site of the dolphins swimming just off the beach. The round trip took us only about 40 minutes with photo stops. The views are really fabulous and the lighthouse is impressive and imposing. The walk itself requires medium level of fitness. It’s fairly steep in parts but the steps are well made and even. Not dirt trails. The whole walking track is very well maintained. Wallabies and bird life to see along the way.

Walking from apex park to the lighthouse via the cape Byron walking track was a fair trek. Weather was about 25 so we needed plenty of fluids. The track is mainly uphill with plenty of stair sections, but having plenty of rest areas and photo opportunities. On reaching the lighthouse there is a small cafe. We returned via a footpath along the access road which was a welcome mostly easy downhill walk. Then back to the park.
Round trip was around 2hrs and approx 35 flights of stairs (Apple Watch app)

With two teenage kids in tow, I thought a walk to the lighthouse would be like extracting teeth. The kids really enjoyed it and took some fantastice photos (on digital SLRs, not just their phones). We were lucky enough to see a feww whales off the coast as well.
