The Civic, Barnsley is a multi-storey, multi-purpose arts centre seeking to bring wide-ranging, contemporary artforms to appreciative audiences from Barnsley and beyond. As a proud supporter of the arts in South Yorkshire, The Civic showcases high-quality performances and exhibitions not usually associated with a centre of its size or regional location, and is instrumental in bringing world-class touring theatre, music and arts groups en route to larger UK cultural centres and other venues around the globe.

Comprising a large auditorium, the Assembly Room - accommodating the best in UK theatre, dance, comedy, music, cabaret, independent and classic regional film screenings and family productions - in addition to a large art gallery (Gallery), which hosts a wide variety of innovative and exciting exhibitions dealing with all aspects of art, design and craft, The Gallery programme consists of curated shows and touring exhibitions which work in conjunction with the V&A, Crafts Council, Tate and Design Museum London, as well as with curators here in Barnsley. The building also has a large Panorama display and event space, working offices and several work hubs, as well as boasting a blend of historic and modern architecture enhanced by the adjacent Mandela Gardens. This public space was redeveloped in 2009 for the first time since the 1980s, and also includes facilities for outdoor performances.

Gallery: Tuesday - Saturday, 10am-5pm (last admission is 15 minutes prior to closing time)

Box Office: Monday - Friday, 10am-5pm / Saturday, 10am-4pm Sunday, 10am-4pm (on family performance days)

Civic is a great theatre, we have been a couple of times now, you are so close to the action. Tom was on form and was around meeting and greeting his guests and posing for selfies after. The place can surely only hold a couple of hundred, it got a bit warm because there's no air con but it's almost... More

First visit to this venue here to see the genius comedian Tom Stade. Great venue, great bar service, top notch staff. Would definitely go again. And Tom was amazing as usual. The old chemist cocktail bar opposite was good too.

We went here for the first time to see the brilliant comedian Tom Stade. Small venue, so great view from our front row seats & really great show. I was surprised at the constant flow of people, going to the toilet, while Tom was trying to do his act, which I thought was pretty rude & distracting, but overall a... More

This was a return visit as the venue is very nice. The seats are spacious and comfy enough that you aren't squashed with the stranger next to you. Toilets are very clean and well stocked.

I've visited the Civic numerous times since I moved to Sheffield in 2013. It's not an obviously stunning venue--basically, just a large hall--but it attracts a lot of small, but interesting, touring productions. Of course, performance quality does vary (as in any touring acts-oriented venue), but most of the times I've been very happy about my visits. The minus points... More

Good to see the Civic being used for entertainment again, Opus 7 were brilliantly funny! Didn`t realise the seating was not allocated so would have gone in earlier.

Went to see the Royal Photographic Society exhibition - which was excellent and totally free. Also viewed another excellent photographic exhibition at the same time which I didn't know was on. Gallery space is very good with natural and artificial light. Young staff were pleasant and helpful. The cafe/restaurant was really good and incredible value. If you have a taste... More

went to see Ed Byrne at the civic and it was a sell out. A very entertaining stand up comedy show well worth seeing in this compact theatre a great setting for comedians as they can be so close to their audience!!!!!!! However more staff needed on the bar although they did their best!!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experience at The Civic. I've passed on your comments about the bar staff to our Operations Manager, and he assures me this was a one-off due to last minute sickness absence. Hope to see you at The Civic again soon! More

Lovely building, great staff and excellent shows on. Saw the best show ever of my life at this place, Call Mr Robeson. Looking forward to Ed Bryne and Matt Forde later this year. Galleries are good too. Well worth a visit and a gem in Barnsley.
