I grew up on the council estate opposite the old Fusiliers Barracks and went in a few times as a kid. It was the late 70's and early 80's, and I know I wouldn't have appreciated it then as I do now, partially because I'm an adult, and partially because my son is a Fusilier himself, but the new museum is way beyond what the old one was. The old one, whilst steeped in history, artefacts and information, despite it's factual accuracy, didn't really know how to present it in an entertaining, informative and enlightening way. But this is the 21st Century now and times have changed, as this is a very well set out and informative building with some great exhibits and a surprise or two as well, with very knowledgeable and helpful staff. It has a great cafe that is reasonably priced and a function room, although I have never used that. A great way to while away a couple of hours :)

I wanted info on hiring the place for a civil ceremony? I left 3 messages over 3 days with 3 different people. I’m still waiting to hear from the event coordinator. Don’t bother, we will go elsewhere.

I came here for a presentation function in the largest function room here a few weeks ago and being early, I had a look around the museum and bought a couple of things from the gift shop as a contribution towards their running costs. The function I came to was a super event and the staff there were so helpful. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and I’m sure that the organisers will have the event here next year too. There was plenty of on street parking (pay meters) and it was easy to get a space, except market days which are Thursday/Friday/Saturday’s.

This museum not just for those interested in military history. Well thought out journey via local connections to the wider prism of the empire. Some of the personal testimonials were very moving along with evocative photographs and other memorabilia.
