Regular visitor to Marlborough and usually wouldn’t hesitate to give 5 stars. On this occasion I’ve accidentally come on Mop fair weekend. My god Marlborough why do you do this to yourselves? Cheap nasty tacky and completely inappropriate for a town like this. Non of the locals in shops I spoke or in restaurants wanted it either. I will be back - but not in October

okay, the met forecast had am amber warning and so many of the shops were closed. Especially the independent ones. There were gusts but nothing especially bad. Still our favourite bookshop took the day off as did our favourite cafe. Sad that these retailers were closed and yet Waitrose was fully staffed and was Costa Coffee !

A lovely quaint high street with independent shops but some commercial coffee shops. Car parking easy to access in middle of the street reasonable priced. Shop keepers chatty & friendly.

We were passing through Marlborough on our way to Avebury stones it looked nice so we stopped.
We only saw the high street and the shops and tearooms. All nice but expensive, £6 for tea for two in the tearoom we used.
But there is a Greggs for a cheaper cake and sandwich.

One of the widest high streets in the country. Lovely, quant little town. Would recommend a visit. Pity a lot of the shops are nit dog friendly, not sure why when the don’t sell food! Had money to spend and nowhere to spend it.

If you are travelling along the M4 and are not in too much of a hurry try a diversion onto the A4 between Hungerford and Chippenham instead. A much more picturesque route and you can then stop off in Marlborough High Street on the way. Find a free parking space, browse the many shops etc and pop into Waitrose for a snack. There are restaurants of course but that might take too much time.

Marlborough High Street is very pleasant and well worth a visit - but - I am not sure it has the widest high street in England or indeed Britain. I think that accolade goes to Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham. Again, a very pleasant and mostly pedestrianised high street making it a joy helped by development over the last few decades. Although many of the period buildings have been disgracefully demolished, this High Street in the north-east of England should be a priority for the tourist. With its decorative block sets and water feature, the town's renaissance since the collapse on the heavy engineering industry is a huge credit to the people. Yes, go to picturesque Marlborough, you will not be disappointed but you will be equally pleased with Stockton-on-Tees. Trust me.

We called in on our way to Avebury from Stonehenge, OK, it was a rainy day but I have never encountered such a snooty place with so many stuck up people!! (and we come from the Cotswolds which IS posh!!) The high street is nice, there are some lovely shops but it is not a welcoming place! We actually had a competition, how many people smile back at us- there was a grand total of two (one couple who must have also been visitors!!!). We left feeling very disappointed and chose to go elsewhere for lunch.

Overpriced parking in the high street - dreadful market selling tat -far too many charity shops - feels like a rather naff "seaside" town that's moved to the country - could be soooooo much better.

All to often I have been on a mission to get through Marlborough as quickly as possible on my way to the M4, but every now and then I stop to stroll and browse.
With its famous public school and affluent residents, Marlborough is not short of shops that would take your credit card to melting point, but there are plenty of quaint and traditional shops as well. The charity shops are rich pickings here too, taking into consideration my comments at the beginning of this paragraph!
As someone else commented, it is best to park away from the central street parking and walk through; I often get free parking that way and benefit from being able to take in more of the character and atmosphere.
Well worth a stop if you are passing through on the main A4.

Are all the shops open on a Monday?
Written April 1, 2019
A curious question. Aren't all shops in the UK open on Mondays ? :)
Written April 4, 2019
What are the opening hours for shops on weekend ?
Written November 17, 2018
Re opening hours, the shops are traditionally 09.00 until 17.00 but if the market is on then those stalls made close earlier. Sunday - not all shops will be open, the local Tourist Information Centre should be able to help with that. Enjoy.

Any free parking? Working all weekend and need somewhere free / cheap to leave the car for 48 hours?
Written August 29, 2018
To my knowledge, any parking within reach of the High Street is car parks/pay & display so unless you are prepared to walk a bit, it’s a case of finding the cheapest. Sorry I can’t offer any suggestions.

Are many of the shops open on Sundays? Thanks.
Written October 20, 2016
Hi, yes and there's a market in the main shopping street
