I've just finished two weeks of Spanish lessons at Veronica's SJDS Spanish School. I've really enjoyed it and have learnt a lot. I now feel much more confident speaking Spanish to locals. My boyfriend and I chose to do four hours a day for two weeks (you can choose how many hours a day you'd like and the time of day). The classes are one on one so the lessons are tailored to your skill and speed of learning. We could have been taught together but really benefited from paying a little extra for one on one classes. We chose to have morning classes so that we would finish in time for the shuttle to nearby surf beaches. During the four hour classes you have a break where Veronica provides you with coffee and fruit. The teachers are all locals with a great knowledge of the rules of Spanish and techniques to teach it. My two teachers Mariana and Irelande were great and very patient when we came across topics that I struggled with. I started the class as a complete beginner who'd only used Duolingo but I've left understanding a lot more about the grammar and different tenses. Veronica is a lovely person to communicate with and was really helpful when my partner was too ill for a lesson (rearranging it and offering to accompany him to a doctor). One really important thing that distinguishes this school from the others is that the profits go into the local community. Recently, profits were used to build a roof on a local primary school. One thing to note is that the school is a very short walk (<10 mins) from the centre of San Juan del Sur, not 4 miles as displayed on trip advisor. Once you've completed your course you are presented with a book to help you continue to learn and practice Spanish in your own time. I'd highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to improve their ability and confidence in speaking Spanish while giving back to the local community.

Excellent school and staff. The owner is Veronica and she is talented and congenial. She is also a nurse so we spent a lot of time together taking care of patients. These were people who were unable to make it into town to see the physician there.

I studied with Veronica’s SJDS spanish school for a week, and I liked it a lot! They were actually closed due to reconstruction of their school, but helped me out by being so nice to come to my hotel at playa Maderas some 10km down the road every day to teach me! I studied with Amanda, who is very sweet, patient and knowledgeable. Definitely a big thumbs up for this place!

I stayed in Nicaragua and studied Spanish here for 2 weeks. Previously, I had learned Spanish in my university in Canada. On the first day of lessons - it felt like I had learned more in Nicaragua than I did in university! The lessons really took into account what you knew and didn't know and focused on different ways to learn. I loved that I could talk to the teacher like a friend, it made me learn much faster. My teacher was Amanda, and we went on walks in the afternoon when it was hot, and she tested me on flash cards while we ate nica-style ice cream. She was so friendly and talked to me about her family, friends, and experiences. This way I learned more about the people of Nicaragua and the every-day life there. I loved being exposed to the vibrant culture and of course, it motivated me to find the words in Spanish - and listen attentively to the Spanish that was used to talk about this. After I left Nicaragua I traveled to Costa Rica and I was so surprised by the level of my Spanish - I had improved a lot in 2 weeks! I would highly recommend this school. They are genuinely great teachers and have good intentions to help spread the Spanish language, and are very sweet and welcoming :)

I have had many experiences learning Spanish, but my experience at Veronica's Spanish school was by far the best. The individualized program sets this school apart from others that I have attended. My tutor, Jeffry, was excellent! He was able to hone in on exactly what I needed in order to progress. I made a lot of progress in only one week. Everyone at the school was really friendly and I appreciated the transportation that the school set up for me to and from Managua. I highly recommend this school!
