Luis and his partner were fantastic and managed to put us into dorado and jackfish today! Professional and expert service..and the panga 31 ft boat is a great fishing vessel.
The trip also included fresh fruit, water/soda, snacks and fresh ceviche prepared from our catch, amazing! Would definitely recommend Luis and San Juan surf n sport to anyone interested in a fun day of fishing.

My husband and I had Luis and Danny take us out fishing. Luis was able to get my husband hooked on to a huge black marlin. Took him almost 2.5 hrs to land…. Beautiful fish…awesome team!

What a great day out on the boat! We booked the fishing and beach tour and we had a blast!! We caught three fish, snorkeled and swam to a cool private beach! The Captian was great and helped us all day. We recommend this tour and experience.

Went fishing last week in SJDS, booked thru email with Dario on the 31 foot panga for the full day deep sea outing. Our captain Luis and mate Dorian were awesome - if I was reviewing them specifically they would get 5 stars.
Dario was very responsive over email, though I don't like how he requires a full deposit to book. (I've deep sea charter fished countless times with many different outfits in both the US and other countries- this is definitely not the norm).
We didn't catch a thing until about 6 hours into our 8 hour charter - then we hooked into a nice black marlin! Took about 3 hours to get it in and by the time it was at the boat it had died from exhaustion. Marlin are typically catch/tag/release so I can understand that this might pose a problem.
Upon arriving back to the port, we were greeting by half of SJDS as a marlin has not been brought to the dock in years. Immediately we were met by Nicaragua's equivalent of fish/game who were questioning why the marlin died.
Instead of speaking on our behalf, Dario appointed my friend who lives in SJDS and came with fishing to be the translator to the game warden. My friend can speak spanish well but there was still a slight language barrier - Dario still wanted my friend to do all the talking (meanwhile he was snapping pics with his family and friends with our fish!). Seemed like he was more interested in showing his wife, daughter and their friends our fish than dealing with the warden himself.
After about 3 hours of this nonsense it was decided that fish/game was confiscating our fish and that Dario would have to go to Managua to settle this the next day (Friday). Meanwhile during this entire time, the fish was rotting in the scalding sun and seemed like it was going to waste. Makes me very sad as a sportsman... At the end we were not even given a ride to my friend's house (about a mile from Darios shop) as Darios friend had to pick him back up at the port and was afraid to keep him waiting 5 extra minutes...
Over the next few days Dario was much more concerned with obtaining our pictures/video of our fishing outing for his use and trying to book us another charter. When we ran into him in town the next day we asked him what the status of our fish was (the day he was supposedly going to Managua) and he said he had to instead gather wood that day.... REALLY?! He promised us he would have an answer for us!
Dario knew we wanted to fish multiple days but with him completely dropping the ball we decided to book with another company. We had a great day on the water thru Hotel Gran Oceano, and after comparing what both companies have to offer - I'd highly recommend Gran Oceano. Both companies use the same type of Pangas however Gran Oceano will happily provide a full lunch as well as rides complimentary. They also DO NOT hit you up for a measly dollar before getting on the boat as it's rightfully included in their rate. We were graciously offered a ride back to my friend's house and they were surprised we did not ask to be picked up in the morning as they would've done so.
Overall - Dario really dropped the ball on us. Considering it is the "slow" time in SJDS, we felt like maybe we'd take a higher priority with Dario considering all the activities we were going to book thru him. Don't be fooled into this like we were - he really just has the best web presence and probably pays the most for his google analytics. Paying as much as he does for marketing/web presence does not equal the value you'd expect to get from his operation. Unfortunately we were quite disappointed with Dario, especially after seeing what other companies had to offer for comparable prices.

Brian H,
Thank you for going out with us.
We are all super happy that you and your friends were able to catch one of the most prized fish in the sea for sportsfishing.
I guess that was not enough to give us a 5 star. When you book a fishing trip with us that is what you are paying for-- for us to do the best job possible to land you a fish----there is no guarantee to that.
I want to make clear a few of the points-
The time that your friend was speaking the the fish and game agent- I was there translating and asking your friend what happened so that he could get the story from the people that were actually there. The time the fish was in the sun was because he--the agent had not yet arrived and i was arguing with the other agent in their office as to why they were going to keep the fish since the fish died during its struggle...You are not aware of this because you were outside.
-1. we do not usually pick up or drop clients back to their friends homes, hotel or any other place unless you ask us. We are happy to do so. But we need to know before hand. I just picked up a client at his hotel this morning, offered to take him back--he said he was ok staying in town
2. You said to us that you wanted to do a few days fishing, the day after the first day of fishing. Since you had captured the best fish we have caught all year, i thought it would be appropriate to ask you if you wanted to go again. I did say to you that if you wanted to rebook that we would need a deposit as for all clients.
3. The fish was impounded by the authorities and we were given clearance by them that the fish drowned upon his. Unfortunately when i was going to managua(200 miles and all day roundtrip) I called the agent in charge to see if we could get the fish released--but he changed the dates to meet which was a day after you were leaving----SO -- not having the fish had nothing to do with you booking somewhere else.
4. We offer paypal for the convenience of our clients-so i do not understand your qualm for paying for the tour. Everytime i purchase something online I pay for the entire thing-not half now -half when i get it. We have gotten prepared many times and are left waiting at the docks fully fueled and prepared- to have a no show when we take partial deposits or no deposits.
5. Due to the fact that we strive for the very best we SPEND - $0 on advertising. Not even on google. Our guest do it for us and by the way 98 percent have never caught a 184 pound Marlin- that is why we have over 160 5 Star reviews
We are all disappointed that the fish was confiscated but that was 100 percent out of our control as we always try to release these beautiful creature.

I go to Nicaragua at least once a year. Last year was my first time fishing with a real charter service and not some regular panga run by a local.
1) Unlike most services, in Nicaragua, the owner of SJDS Surf and Sport (Dario Obando) meets and greets all of his clients whether or no he will be fishing with them or not. I met him last year on my first trip with them. He set us up with his captain Luis, and assistant Dorian. The staff was super friendly, and fun. I work in the service industry so I know what good service is.
2) Fishing expertise: I am an avid fisherman and spend more time on the water than most people I know. That being said it's not easy to please me when it comes to a fishing trip. Dario's staff knows where the fish are. They fish themselves and make it a point to find the fish. They also set up buoys that serve a structure for baitfish, which in turn attracts the big game. My first experience with them was a four hour trip with my mother and little cousin. EVERYONE CAUGHT FISH. We caught a mess of dorado, tuna, and one sailfish amongst the many that were lost. They have all the gear you will need.
3) Last but not least. Unlike most fishing companies in Nicaragua, Dario is the face of his company. He responds too all e-mails himself and greets you upon arrival. I have fished with other people before but I was always left wondering if my captain would be any good. Dario puts his stamp of approval on his staff and they are well deserving of it.
If you want to fish in Nicaragua, check out San Juan del Sur and fish with " San Juan Del Sur Surf and Sport". They are the most hospitable company i've met in the country. Book a trip with them. You wont regret it.

We took a half day boat out toward the Costa Rica border for fishing. Luis set everything up just the night before and even picked us up and dropped us off at our resort. Dario and Darwin captained the boat and took care of the lures, resulting in 5 black skipjack tuna and a mahi mahi that weighed about 12 pounds. Everything went great once the fish started biting! Next time I'll go during the wahoo or sailfish season with these guys, I was very happy with them. Especially since they brought the Tino, and made me have one each time I caught a fish!

I went on the Sunset Booze Cruise with my fiance and it was a ton of fun! You fly around on the boat, listening to music and drinking, and then going for a little swim. And the views, of course, are awesome.

Would highly reccomend San Juan del Sur Surf and Sport for a family fishing trip. We took our kids age 5 and 6 out for an afternoon with them on December 31st. We could not have had a better time, they made sure our kids had a great time and adjusted quickly to both childrens needs. Only problem was we caught too many fish! :-) Made it hard to call it a day when they kept biting. They filleted and prepped our fish for us when we got back to shore and we took them home for dinner that night.
Looking forward to visiting Nicaragua again soon and for another trip with San Juan del Sur Surf and Sport!

Went out with these guys for a full day of fishing on Sunday, June 28. It was a blast. Firstly, I appreciate the correspondence from Dario, the owner. He gave us all information that we needed before the trip extremely quickly, and called us twice on our trip to see how everything was going. Secondly, since we were outside of SJDS and our resort wouldn't bring us to town before the 6am departure, he offered to pick us up for $12 USD.
The captain, Dorian, was extremely kind and knowledgeable. They packed juice, some snacks, beer, and water and never ran out.
We caught 6 jackfish, 2 black tuna, and a needle-nose. It was a shame that we couldn't take some back to the resort with us.
Overall - great experience, highly recommended.
