Beautiful ex residence of Zhu's family built in 1910-30s, on a land of 20,000 square meter that includes a part of many court halls (living quarters) that each has different theme as well as huge garden. Nice sculptures, wooden paintings, tiles and flowers. I came in January when there were layers of low clouds on blue sky make the feel so picturesque.

A large garden of a wealthy merchant family. This one had a lot of appeal and enjoyed walking in there with my guide, he provided a lot of insight into this garden. A hotel is also inside here, but no real amenities for the hotel other than the beauty of the garden and surroundings. Worth the visit and to take photos.

If you have the time this a very pleasant attraction. We spent much time sitting in the garden at the back of the small lake just taking in the ambience of the place.

It is well maintained for its age and provides an incite of how the family used to live.

The wood carvings are very ornate and detailed.

There are 42 courtyards and 214 rooms.

I found espresso in the most unlikely spot. The barista here speak a little English and make THE best shots in Yunnan.
I highly recommend it to any caffeine deprived traveller.

Interesting old place, more a rich people house that a garden. Lots of rooms, courtyards, nooks and crannies to explore at your heart content and speed. Great collection of bonsai trees. The main garden with waterfalls is also very nice.
Well worth a visit.

Beautiful and old charm buildings and gardens to wander around. Fairly extensive buildings with rich history to catch a glimpse of rich family in the past.

Maybe you have been Suzhou Garden near Shanghai, however, should you visit YUNNAN, I do suggest to come to JIANSHUI town, to feel the less developed town, to taste Toufu BBQ, to see the second biggest Confusion temple which has over 700 years.
This garden is wonderful representative of local building and art.

I've been here at other times of year, but wondered about how it would look in mid January when most flowers were not in bloom. Well, in a nutshell, it's still great.

I focused on the history more this time. Looked at all the photographs and read the text of all the murals. Makes a fascinating story if you are grounded in Ming/Qing history.

The construction details and the geometry of the layout are still very appealing, even when the foliage is less lush. I paid a lot of attention this time to the 盆栽 which are manicured potted shrubs and trees, also known as bonsai. They have lots and lots of fine specimens.

The lady at the ticket office was unwilling to give a discount either for students or the elderly. That was disappointing, but it was still worth the 50 Yuan admission fee.

The Zhu family garden was an interesting place to look around. There were hundreds of school children here which made the visit a little challenging.

Nice to wondering through the old Chinese house and imagine how the family lived before. Not so touristy. Entrance fee is bit expensive.
