Outside of the market day this village (Upal/Opal/Upar - depending on your research!) is a good place to buy food for the road trip to Karakul Lake. Good for fresh fruits and nan. The village is not far from the Tomb of Mahmud Kashgary - b1005 and a famous Uighur linguist who wrote the first dictionary of the Turkish language.

This is a great place to stop for lunch on the way to/from Tashkurgan to Kashgar. Traditional Uighur and Tajik fare like rice pilaf with carrot and pumpkin and lamb, kebabs, breads and loads of fruit. Try the local tea which is made from black te, goji berry, saffron and cardamom. Lovely!

We were looking forward to seeing the local Monday market in the small village of Opal particularly as we had been unable to see the Sunday Livestock Market in Kashgar. Consequently we planned our trip to Tashkorgan on a Monday with a stopover at Opal enroute but at the last minute we were informed by our Uygur guide that all residents of Opal had to attend a meeting every Monday morning to “honour” the Chinese flag. Therefore the Opal market cannot take place on a Monday morning any more. We were given to understand that this has been the case for at least the last two years but is not widely publicised outside of Xinjiang Provence

It is about 45kms from Kashgar. And there is a Monday Market every Monday. It is very interesting village market which shows 15-20 years ago Kashgar Sunday market.

This is a small Uyghur village (I thought it was spelt Opal); on the way to Karakul. Since we had started early from Kashgar, this was a great place to stop for breakfast of Polo and Tea at the several cafe's lining the main road in town. The roads, town and restaurants on the roadside are very clean and safe to eat there. THis is also a good place top pick up fruits, bread (Naan) and snacks for Karakul, since at Karakul, there is nothing really there that sells anything. Pleasant, should stop if on the way.

If you are visiting Karakul lake, likely your tour will stop here to buy bread and fruits because there's pretty much nothing available at the lake. That all there is to the village. Some small bakeries and roadside shops selling cooked food like pulao.
