We took a fall ice cream excursion. We enjoyed the steam engine. The cars were well kept. The scenery was rural and hilly . The Ice Cream was welcome and gave us something to do besides just waiting in a tiny town while the train turned around and returned to pick us up.

My family and I arrived about 12:30 for our 2pm ride so we could make sure we got seats together ( it was myself, my husband, and my three children) we sat in the first part of the train. 5 minutes before departure the conductor asked us all to move because a group of 38 wanted to sit together. We got up to find other seats and when we couldn’t find one together we came back. Again we were told we had to move. We explained there wasn’t anywhere for us to sit together and he insisted there was a place for us to sit together and we needed to move for this group that wanted to stay together. He actually stood there until we did move. We ended up having to move to the last compartment on the train and there were no places for my family to sit together. This probably would have been a great experience but my husband had to sit with my youngest, my two other children had to sit somewhere else, and I had to sit alone away from them all. For what we paid I was so disappointed that we couldn’t enjoy it, especially when the tickets say no reservations and the fact that this large group came last minute! I doubt we will do this again. My kids were upset, my husband was upset and so was I. And we weren’t the only families that had to move and split up!

While there is nothing simple about the workings of a steam locomotive, there is a blissful simplicity of riding it through autumn-colored Pennsylvania woodlands on a train filled with children heading for a pumpkin patch. This is what my wife and I did this October as we discovered the Everett Railroad and its steam train excursions. It's amazing how many images and memories can be compacted into a one hour train ride: the clouds of steam emanating from steam engine # 11, the glorious whistle and bell, the chatter of children anticipating their visit to the pumpkin patch, the clickety-clack of jointed rail, and the creaks and rumbles of 80-year old railroad coaches. The Everett Railroad's steam excursions are clearly a labor of love both for this functioning, profitable short line. The community of Hollidaysburg rallies around these excursions as volunteers, conductors, on-board information welcoming committee, and depot attendants. Keep your expectations modest: these are old coaches, there is no A/C, windows should be opened with help from the RR staff, but their happiness at your riding this train is palpable and ebullient. In addition to every child getting a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch, upon return to Hollidaysburg, passengers are treated to hot cider and pumpkin shaped cookies. A fitting ending to a truly memorable trip into the past, but also a reminder of just how wonderful today can be.

First, no one mentioned when we arrived, nor was it written on the ticket my husband printed at home, that you needed to take that printed ticket into the station and exchange it for an actual ticket. So we waited in line to get on the train only to be told that the paper wouldn't do it. NOT happy Second, we stopped for 45 at some tiny station. So it wasn't a "real" 3 hour ride but really a 2 hour ride. Lastly, one we all had reboarded in this tiny nothing town, one of the Everett employees came into the car announcing that everyone had to sit in the same seats that they were in previously. Apparently someone didn't "save" their seat with a hat or purse or anything and was now pouting about it. But seriously, you can't call "same seats" AFTER everyone's already seated! All of that being said, it was truly a beautiful say for a trian ride! The steam engine was unexpectedly quiet. We had a very enjoyable day

Happened upon this quaint little tourist train on our way to Chimney Rock. It was a nice little side adventure. The ride is just out and back and lasted about an hour. We were fortunate enough to have a volunteer from the local chapter of the historical society to give us some extra info.
