Nice local gounds to visit
Jan 2021
Very easy to get to. Perfect place for a nice walk around the property Mansion was not open at the time of our visit; however, we very much enjoyed touring the grounds. Highly recommend.

Beautiful venue for outdoor events, historic mansion and gardens.

Unfortunately one cannot tour this place on weekends and the visits are limited now but the Gardens are beautiful and generally open to public. The whole complex is a nice place for a relaxing stroll.

Twentieth Century Estate and Garden
Jun 2019 • Couples
This is a lovely place to visit. The house is unfurnished so one is able to appreciate the architectural details. The tour guide was full of interesting information and amusing historical anecdotes. That said the outstanding feature of the visit is the garden, especially the Hidden Garden filled with amazing horticultural architectural features.

Charming location

This is a place for me to paint that is nearby. It reminds me of a formal English garden. I love the architecture of the outer wall. There is usually something in bloom. I do not enter the mansion because I am interested in the landscape.

Needs more attention and work
Jul 2018 • Solo
No one was around to acknowledge a tour. The grounds need work. I found it to have so much more potential. It is sort of unkempt, a little dirty and not tended to as expected for a property as historic as this. But, it is historic and charming. I’m hoping the grounds are more well-kept in the future.

Beautiful house and gardens
Jun 2017 • Solo
In some ways, the gardens are more interesting than the house. They are beautiful and well worth a visit on their own. That being said, touring the house is still worthwhile. There are no furnishings inside, but there are some interesting features as well as display panels. The tour guide gave some interesting information on one of the quite eccentric owners in the 19th century and the final owner, a Roosevelt relative. I recommend calling ahead to ensure that a tour guide is available.

Such a delightful country home that has been carefully restored to its original condition. Worth a visit!

Empty House with interesting grounds
Oct 2016 • Couples
Went on a guided tour of the Highlands mansion and grounds a few months ago. We literally stumbled on the place while driving up to Skippack. As other reviewers said, the site is impressive at first. The house sits on top of a hill surrounded by gardens and cool outbuildings.
But, the tour of the home is disappointing. The house is empty of furniture and decorations. You go from room to room on the tour, and the docent explains things that occurred at the home, but save for one cheesy looking reproduction painting, there's nothing to see. After awhile, the tour gets drawn out and sorta dull. Our docent was a nice lady who knew her stuff, but I kinda felt sorry for her cause she just didn't have much to work with.
I know places like Winterthur have basements full of furniture/decorations they don't have room to display...why not ask for some loaner furniture or paintings? This place could be really cool if it was decorated with era appropriate furnishings.

Spectacular gardens
Aug 2015
The gardens are beautiful and lush and the mansion offers several creative events and programs ranging from a child audience to an adult. The tour was slightly underwhelming as was the mansion. I wish more rooms were open and that there was more of a story to tell. I still enjoyed my visit and will certainly return.

Don't bother without an appointment
May 2016 • Couples
I do remember visiting their website and saw that is was advisable to call ahead to see if a docent would be available on your selected day to visit. We were in the area on May 4 2016 and decided we would go check out this property. Arriving at the front door we were greeted with a less than cordial greeting, almost like we had bothered her. So my advice is don't waste you time if you haven't call ahead. It also seemed like she didn't want to bother with just two of us.
