I stopped by in the late afternoon of July 4th and I was the only one there! It made me feel like it was my personal garden. First let me say, I want to live in that Gardener's Cottage! I would even do the gardening! The house and entire property is beautiful. I like how the garden is divided up into "rooms". I love garden walls and this garden has a few! So much character and charm. The house is beautiful and that barn is one of the most beautiful barns I've ever seen!

Very easy to get to. Perfect place for a nice walk around the property Mansion was not open at the time of our visit; however, we very much enjoyed touring the grounds. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately one cannot tour this place on weekends and the visits are limited now but the Gardens are beautiful and generally open to public. The whole complex is a nice place for a relaxing stroll.

I do remember visiting their website and saw that is was advisable to call ahead to see if a docent would be available on your selected day to visit. We were in the area on May 4 2016 and decided we would go check out this property. Arriving at the front door we were greeted with a less than cordial greeting, almost like we had bothered her. So my advice is don't waste you time if you haven't call ahead. It also seemed like she didn't want to bother with just two of us.

This is a lovely place to visit. The house is unfurnished so one is able to appreciate the architectural details. The tour guide was full of interesting information and amusing historical anecdotes. That said the outstanding feature of the visit is the garden, especially the Hidden Garden filled with amazing horticultural architectural features.

This is a place for me to paint that is nearby. It reminds me of a formal English garden. I love the architecture of the outer wall. There is usually something in bloom. I do not enter the mansion because I am interested in the landscape.

No one was around to acknowledge a tour. The grounds need work. I found it to have so much more potential. It is sort of unkempt, a little dirty and not tended to as expected for a property as historic as this. But, it is historic and charming. I’m hoping the grounds are more well-kept in the future.

We visited here as one of our stops on our Fun Time Tours 1-day summer mystery trip. Meg met us and was with us most of the time we were there. She gave us an excellent history of the property. We were grateful for seating for the group as we heard about the history of this beautiful home. After looking at the rooms of the mansion we wandered around outside the lovely grounds & gardens. We all enjoyed the beautiful weeping willow trees outside the side entrance. Thank you, Meg, for making it a delightful visit for our tour folks.

I visited the grounds in mid October. Not much to see. Very few flowers this time of year. The flower beds were overgrown and needed lots of loving care. Perhaps the gardener was on vacation?

In some ways, the gardens are more interesting than the house. They are beautiful and well worth a visit on their own. That being said, touring the house is still worthwhile. There are no furnishings inside, but there are some interesting features as well as display panels. The tour guide gave some interesting information on one of the quite eccentric owners in the 19th century and the final owner, a Roosevelt relative. I recommend calling ahead to ensure that a tour guide is available.
