Big let down, post COVID
Sep 2021
Big letdown. [Up front, we’re not regular betters/gamblers and we only have gone to live horse races in the past.]

We had good memories from multiple years of visiting, mainly near fall, to have our child (friends too) have some dinner and watch the live races, and make some small bets on the horses kids pick out.

This year, it was very different. We think due to Covid, they closed the main upper floor restaurant, buffet restaurant, and only had a small pick-up counter open on the casino side, where kids can’t go. It has an extremely limited menu and pretty much all junk food. So, the adults can go in through the casino to get the food, but have to bring out a tray back through the casino and through betting areas to eat outside. Before, the café and buffet had separate access that allowed for direct outside access.

They consolidated the betting machines and walk-up counters in a room at the end of the building, which means quite a walk each time if you aren’t at that end of the building and longer lines to wait in, with only a couple walk-up counters open … most still prefer a human to dispense the race ticket, rather than the kiosks. Before, they had betting counters conveniently outside along the back of the building.
The live races are still good, being able to see the horses up close in the staging area, etc. That is the best part of the experience for us.

Because we had a friend’s child with us this time, I took along my better Nikon camera in a carry bag, and took some shots of them (candid and a few posed) for the friend’s parents, who weren’t along. After we finished eating, quite some time later, an employee (nice lady) walked over to our outdoor table and told me that they didn’t allow cameras, as taking photos of the horses/races on grounds were copyrighted. I was very confused at first, thinking she was going to confiscate my photo memory card or make me delete the photos that had the kids in them. She clarified that I needed to put my camera away and I complied and stowed the camera. She suggested using a cell phone camera instead. Ironically, my cell phone camera takes better videos than the Nikon does, but doesn’t do background bokeh (blurring) effect very well.

A little later on, a security guy (with a mobile transceiver) came over to our table and asked if I had the camera and I said yes, in my bag, and explained about the lady who talked to me. He said I need to immediately take it to the car, even though the camera had been in the bag for at least 20 minutes and I wasn’t going to take it back out. I’m not a professional photographer, just an occasional visitor, and it irritated me that they would hassle us, first time just saying to put it away, now telling me to take it to the car. Perhaps someone with photography experience can explain to Presque Isle Down’s management policy makers how cell phone cameras (like higher end Apple and Samsung) are able to take as good as quality videos and in some cases, photos, than a bigger camera … they don’t hassle people taking videos or photos with cell phones. And sharing some photos of family at a live horse race on social media might actually be good for both public relations and promoting more business.

Bottom line, a very sour grapes experience and a feeling of being chastised. What was once a very nice experience is now ruined and certainly something of our past. We went to the car, never to return.

Win some, lose some
Sep 2021
Went here three separate times over a Wednesday/Thursday. Twice in the mornings and once in the evening. The slot machines seemed to pay out well in the mornings, but nothing in the evening. Machines are somewhat limited in the non-smoking section, but luckily my favorite game was there, so no issue. We really enjoyed ourselves, just playing the penny slots.

Waste of time and money

They have their machines set to rip off people. The payouts are few and far between. Very disappointing and stressful experience. You will be chasing your money back the entire visit.

Just another casino
Aug 2021 • Couples
My husband and I’s experience was similar to other casinos in PA. We signed up for the players club, and got free slot play. If you came back the next day (we did), you got the same amounts of free slot play again. The environment seemed clean and they offered wipes all around the slot machines to wipe them off. We didn’t notice a free drink station. I’d come back again.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your visit to Presque Isle Downs & Casino. We are so glad to hear you took advantage of our new member program! Your review mentioned the free drink station. We did remove ours upon reopening last June and that was one of the first things we removed (at that time people were not permitted to "self-serve"). We are still feeling our way through this like most businesses. But we appreciate you taking the time to visit us and look forward to seeing you again when you're in the area.

smoky and smelly
Jul 2021
They allow smoking and the whole place reeks. To get to the non-smoking section you have to walk through a large area of smoking. Slots seemed stingy as well - i spent $20 on one quarter slot only winning 4 tokens on one spin - the rest were all duds.

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to write a review. If you parked on the north side of the casino building (closest to I-90) then yes, you entered through our smoking section. The South side of the casino entrance is completely smoke free. We will send a suggestion to management to see if there is an opportunity to designate the entrance as smoking / non-smoking to assist our guests. Thank you again for sharing your experience! We appreciate the feedback!

Safe and enjoyable
Jul 2021 • Couples
Loved the racing. Cleanest track I've ever been to. Easy to view horses pre-post, plenty of kiosks for betting, but I suggest going to the attendant rather than a kiosk to retrieve any winnings. We also thought the casino was nice but I miss the days where you could play slots with coins. I found it confusing to pull winnings from one slot to the next, but admit I am not an experienced gambler. The casino card seemed useless. I probably would have stayed longer and gambled more if I could have got comfortable with this aspect.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your experience about the casino and the racetrack. To say the last 18+ months have been challenging would be an understatement. And the staffing shortages have not helped with the level of guest service our customers receive. The next time you're on property and at the slot machine, select the "HELP" button on the machine. Our reps will be more than glad to help you with the club benefits. (For every 500 points you earn, you'll get $1 in comp or free play). Thanks again for the feedback! We hope you come visit us again soon!

Good place.

I can’t say enough nice things. It was open, clean and nicely lit. Good assortment of up to date slots.I do wish I could have gotten a drink while playing. The system does not allow ordering and I did not see any servers. A staff person was able to direct me to the vending machines. Apparently they are short staffed. I was able to park fairly close. If the big lots were full, it would have been too crowded.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We appreciate the feedback. We have a few other things open since you were here (but with staffing that can change on a day to day basis). Thank you again for taking the time to write a review.

Needs Cleaned Up
Jul 2021
Went to watch the horses run since July 5th was opening night after being shut down since last year due to COVID-19. I wish someone would have did a walk around the horse race track in the people seating area. The brown bench’s were still very dirty, beat up and in major need of power washing and repaint. Come on you had all last year to make this place sparkle. Some benches were still bent over and unable to be used, this is right in front of the start finish line, open your eyes. We left feeling dirty and disappointed , Long lines to bet, not enough programs, and general feel that just not ready or concerned to impress

We hope you've been able to come back and join us since opening day. You are right. We did not put our best foot forward on opening day like we would have wanted. The staffing limitations certainly did not help our situation. We ended up working with local food trucks to supply our guests with a dining option while they were here. We appreciate the time you took to write a review and appreciate the patience our guests have had.

Had a good experience
Jul 2021
Visited on July 4th and found it to be a nice casino. Clean and well attended to. Landscaping very nice. Separate section for non smokers. Stay away from the Mississippi stud card game though. Each hand is a $20. to $40. dollar attempt.
