Redwood Rides provides guided adventure tours and rentals in and around Redwood National Park on California's North Coast. Our most popular trips are guided kayak tours on the jade-clear Smith River, where you learn to paddle your own inflatable kayak through fun but mellow rapids while gazing up at ancient redwoods. We also offer kayak tours on Class II through Class IV whitewater on the Smith River. We also offer kayak and bike rentals with shuttle service for more independent travelers. Guided bike tours through old-growth redwoods are available on easy, family-friendly trails or on advanced terrain. We booked a half-day kayaking trip on the Smith River in August with Redwood Rides because we wanted a way to cover a lot of ground that would mitigate varying degrees of hiking abilities in our family. We are all experienced kayakers, boaters, and swimmers. This trip exceeded our expectations! Booking was smooth and up-front communication about expectations for the day and where to meet were very clear. Once on the water, our guide Adam was a fountain of knowledge and willing to answer our family's million questions about the river, the trees, birds, fish, and history of the area. He was also totally willing to let us all float and paddle along in companionable silence. A highlight for us was stopping to hike around Stout Grove, which was separately on our trip's itinerary. We'd already seen some redwoods, but walking through the grove as Adam shared historical insights, interesting facts about trees, and hidden gems of the redwood ecosystem added a rich context. While the river level was low, there was just enough rapids to feel adventurous and enough flat water to truly take in the scenery. We were asked as we pushed out from Stout Grove if the kayaks were ours and I responded that we had rented them with Redwood Rides and it was beyond worth every penny. This half day adventure was a highlight of our weeklong redwoods camping trip. And if we're ever in the area again, we will for sure be back. Thank you again for an incredible experience and family memories!

Our guide, Mitchell, was kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. We felt safe with him as our guide, especially since 3/4 of us had not River kayaked before. We found the half day AM trip to be perfect for our family - we saw the river canyon, sufficient little rapids to keep it interesting, and the ideal side trip (1/4 mile walk) into the Stout Grove to enjoy the redwoods. We felt our money was well-spent for this beautiful and enjoyable trip down the river. The whole family gives it five stars.

We took the full day kayak tour, two adults one teen. We decided to do single kayaks, two of ours were a little uncomfortable, the third one was perfect. They were all inflatable. Others in the group had a combination of double kayaks and a raft. It was a fun all day experience and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the river, history, and local fauna. In our group we were paired with there was an elderly man as well as two young children, and the guide (Ryan?) was fantastic helping them enjoy the entire experience as well. This river was low for our tour, which made it very difficult for some of us (me) who got stuck on rocks often. We understand that’s just part of kayaking and there’s nothing that they can do. And didn’t let it ruin our time. I believe we did a total of around five level one rapids and two level twos… all fun and safe. Lunch was awesome. We stopped at a great place to swim and jump off rocks while our guide set everything up. Lunch included a selection of breads meats, cheeses, fruits, chips, hummus and veggies… enough to fill even the hungriest a kayakers. Later we took a second decently long break where there were multiple heights to jump off rocks if you were daring enough as well as a rope swing.. The area the river flows through is gorgeous, and the short hike we took was the perfect length and a great introduction to the redwood forest. Other things of note… the instructions were clear on where to meet, they were on time, and had large dry bags for everyone’s stuff that was kept safely on the raft. Additionally, they provided us with splash jackets that kept us warm and our top half dry. If in a single kayak, you will get wet for sure as water is constantly flowing in and out through draining holes.

Alex of Redwood Rides picked us up in his van in Cresent City and we travelled about 15 minutes down highway 101 to the entrance to the old redwood highway. He had bikes and helmets that fit my family of 4, two adults and two kids ages 7 and 10. He led us on a peaceful, slow bike ride and stopped along the way to point out interesting things about the trees and the foliage. The old road was covered in biomass which made riding a little difficult for my 7 year old who had no off-road experience. At one point, I couldn't keep up with my 10 year old and Alex graciously road with her and the two chatted up a storm while they road ahead of me. Alex carried our water bottles and extra layers in his back pack. I didn't see any other humans. The way back was more uphill, but we are all relatively out-of-shape and did just fine. I would definitely do another trip with Redwood Rides.

1) I understand that your trips are constrained by the river conditions. However, the upper river trip on the Smith River stopping at Stout Grove is sufficiently better than the lower river trip that they should have different prices and one should not be swapped out for the other without some compensation.
2) When we did the lower Smith River trip we stopped at a rock on the bank suitable for jumping into the river. The pullout was a little tricky. Although we had two young girls on the trip 7 and 9. Joe, our guide, did not help either girl land their kayaks.
3) The company was not responsive to emails, voice mail or texts.
4) At the pull out my wife was climbing into the back of the van and the person getting into the forward passenger seat closed the door on her hand. She screamed and tried to pull it out and couldn't until the door was opened. The guide simply ignored the whole incident and didn't even ask my wife how she was.
5) BTW - Tell the guide that the Redwoods are only about 2,000 yrs old not "millions" of years.

This kayak tour was recommended by a waitress we had on our first day in Crescent City. We were SO glad we listened to her!! My boyfriend is a lot more of an advanced adventurer than I am, so this was a great way for us to meet in the middle. My uncoordinated self thrived and enjoyed the challenges the river presented, and my boyfriend enjoyed the beauty of the river and the small rapids we went down. Our guide was super knowledgeable about the area, the plant life on our tour, and even volunteered to take some photos for us! We HIGHLY recommend the kayak tours for anyone looking for a beautiful adventure. It is perfect for beginners, families, and adventurers alike!

We did a half day paddle on Aug 11 of the Redwoods by the River variety. We opted for upper section where we drove our cars to endpoint following shuttle, then shuttled back up to put in around Myrtle Creek. I took the solo kayak and my wife and our 11 year old son took a tandem. Our guide was fantastic and really positive, while teaching us a lot about river paddling technique and the ecology of the river. There were a couple bumpy spots but she called them out to us ahead of entry and gave us strategies to handle them, which worked out fine. We stopped at a large rock midpoint and jumped in the river which was refreshing. We also stopped along the way for a short hike in Stout Grove, which again our guide did a fantastic job teaching us about the ecology and history of this stand of massive redwoods. There were younger kids in our group (riding tandem with their parents) and all smiles the whole way. I can't recommend this experience enough, adults young and older, kids or no kids. Next time we're back in the area, I definitely look forward to booking another paddle with Redwood Rides!

We appreciated the outfitter's willingness to tailor the experience to our group's desires and abilities. They even went out of the way to give directions to our friends who were tagging along with their own watercraft. Their gear was in good condition, they were punctual, and they gave clear instructions for every step of the way. We would definitely recommend.

We (family with 3 teenagers) rode half a day with Redwood Rides on an old already clearly weathered highway through part of the Red woods. The route was great with impressive old trees and great views. The route was relatively easy and with a small downhill section at the end was a lot of fun. Our guide was very engaged, competent and has unobtrusively given us some background knowledge about the trees, the wood and the environment. Beforehand, Redwood rides was pleasant and quick in answering my questions. Unfortunately, the bikes were not up to the latest technical standards. For the route, however, this was no obstacle. All in all we had a lot of fun and would ride with Redwood rides again.

Didn’t see that for rafting. The canoes are not old school. They are self emptying and very stable. I’m only 6ft and 225. Lots of room with me. I’d ask them directly. Well worth the effort

Which of the 2 trips would you recommend? Morning or afternoon?
Written July 2, 2019
We did the afternoon trip, a bit warmer so the swimming in the river was more comfortable. We went mid June, if you go later in the summer, either would probably be good.
Written July 3, 2019
Which of the runs offered in early August is more scenic, the Redwoods by River, Cooper Canyon am or Cooper Canyon pm?
Written June 13, 2019
We will be there in the very beginning of August, and I'm trying to decide which tour to book. My 10-year-old son and I have been rafting before, and he will be in a tandem kayak with me. What do you recommend - one of the Redwood by River kayak floats (morning stretch or afternoon?) for redwoods and scenery, or the Middle Fork Smith Cooper Canyon run for more rapids?
Written June 12, 2019
Can you do both? On two different days?
I went on the easy redwood scenery float with Ryan on X-Mas day 2018 ... with my dog Skye riding shotgun!
Hoping to make it back for the rapids run for a little more action in September.
I don't think you will miss out either way. And these folks know how to take good care of their customers!

Planning for next summer. We will only have a half day then we have to be on the road. What do you recommend?
Written September 14, 2018
The bicycle ride through the Redwoods is a unique close up experience. I wouldn’t miss it.
Of course, the kayak run on the Smith river is wonderful too.

Are there things to do that someone with limited mobility can do? I don't have walker or chair but usually use walking sticks to help with back and weight issues.
Written June 28, 2018
Yes, we can definitely accommodate travelers with limited mobility. Our guides will assist you in getting in and out of your boat, and either limit or cut out the short hike during your trip.

What are kayak conditions in early to mid July. Is it too late to book a one day trip. Is it advised this time of year to use your own basic kayaks?
Written June 24, 2018
It depends on the section of river you choose to float, but river conditions are still beautiful in early to mid-July. There can be certain spots where the river is wide and shallow, and sometimes you can get hung up on rocks, but it's nothing major. You simply scoot or pull your boat along for a few seconds to get it moving again.
Written August 6, 2018
How is the river in early to mid July. Be there July 9-12. Do you have one day trips?
Thanks:
Bob

Are any of your tours dog friendly? We are travelling in August and leaving our dog in the car is not an option.
Written July 11, 2017
Yes, we do allow dogs on our trips! You can take them on your raft or kayak with you, and we have a bike trailer they can ride in for bike trips. We can also recommend dog-friendly hiking trails in the area.
