We were in town for the IceFest and while in the visitor's center discovered it was located thru a courtyard out the back door of the center. It was free to enter and had 2 floors of wonderful Cumberland County history to explore. The Carlisle area has so much early American history, but we were stunned at how extensive and comprehensive the museum was. They took you on a time travel from the early founding's to the late 20th century. We loved the early American sections and the Indian School/Jim Thorpe reintroduction. There were wonderful maps, diagrams, and beautiful historic furniture and we can't say enough about how wonderful the staff was. This is the type of resource you expect at a larger metropolis.

When I do day or overnight trips close by, I have the opportunity to catch up on history that wasn't taught in school. In this case, I was especially interested in the history of the Carlisle Indian School. There was a whole room devoted to it. Also, I learned of the many industrial businesses that started here.

Lovely displays and knowledgeable volunteers. Of course, the whole history of the Carlisle Indian School is a magnificent look at an important part of American History in the saga of Native Americans.

I'm very interested in learning about the Indian School, and when I called the museum I was told they have the most info. about it. They indeed have an exhibit, but I was disappointed, because it's not very expansive. There are photographs and some artifacts, but I was hoping for far more. I didn't have time to visit the Army site, but I'm understanding there's a cemetery there for the school's students. I was told that recently the museum had a special program focusing on the school, including a PowerPoint--it would be a good idea if somehow it could be put on a monitor so that visitors like myself who make a special trip to Carlisle regarding the Indian School could benefit from this research. There are also exhibits on Carlisle's other points of history; they are nicely done. Especially as it's free admission and free parking right behind the building, I do recommend a visit. Small museums need our support. I especially appreciated the clear directions on the website--I wish other tourist attractions would do the same.

As a history buff Carlisle was always on my must-see list of small historic Pennsylvania towns. It is time well-spent to first visit the CCHS's museum. Not only will it give you a good sense of what the last three centuries of life were like in Carlisle, it was very organized and full of outstanding artifacts from colonial times up to a special exhibit on the 1960's. I particularly found the room dedicated to the Carlisle Indian School thought-provoking and well-presented.

Very interesting. Easy to find and in historical part of Carlisle. They have a library to visit for a fee. We only were there for the museum, which was free. Was very surprised when getting off elevator to the second floor. Very large area of several rooms. Great display of the areas history. A timeline relating events to the nations and worlds events. Many many pictures on a wall, with a notebook to look up each numbered picture. Also many other displays. Past area warehouses and factories. Furniture of different periods also on display. The docent was available to answer questions. Enjoyed very much.

It was a free museum and just the right size to spend an hour or two and learn a little history of the area. I thought it was nicely displayed and interesting.

With family history so close in the tiny burg of Newville, I wanted to conduct some family research. The librarians here are amazingly helpful and persistent and uncovered exactly what we were looking for!

This is only open 4 hours on Saturday and not open on Sunday. Nice large genealogical library. To use the library it costs $5. Nice museum. Wonderful old building. I wish it was open longer on weekends so I could really enjoy it ! Easy walk to a main street with good restaurants and wonderful old buildings.
