- Have Camera, Will TravelSouth Bend, Indiana3,739 contributionsNot as picturesque as other along the coast, but a good tour.I was expecting to make a quick stop for photos and maybe climb to the top during a short visit. You have to do a whole tour in order to go inside, so that's what we ended up doing. It was an interesting tour, I'll give them that. You don't actually get to go and look out the top. You get to stick your head into the red and white lens area. It was cool to see that angle of this type of lighthouse as I hadn't actually done that before. The museum is nice and the gift shop pretty extensive. You get a really good view from the bluff that the lighthouse sits on. The Pacific is in the distance, part the sand dunes and clam beds. We had to skip the Cape Blanco Lighthouse because of the extended stop I wasn't expecting. I'm on the fence it it was worth the few hours it took. It was interesting. If you want to know about the innerworkings of a lighthouse, this one is for you.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2024
- Brian R898 contributionsTake the tour of the lighthouse! We were out meandering around the Oregon Coast and had seen the signs for this lighthouse. We drove out to check it out and see what was around it. We saw the signs and the museum and the gift shop. We saw that there was a tour and it was reasonably prices, so we it took it! Great tour! Little did we know that this is the only lighthouse on the Oregon Coast that is open for tours! Well worth the adventure!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 10, 2024
- Misty JHouston, Texas320 contributionsThis is a great stopWe really enjoyed this. We got there early and went on the first tour. It was just us on the tour (the next tour had a couple of groups). Our guide was excellent and gave us a lot of information. He even made it interesting for my 13 year old niece. We were here about 1.5 hours and explored the museum after the lighthouse.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 3, 2024

Being able to climb the stairs to the top and stick your upper body into the lense was a cool experience. The museum is worth a visit, as well. Nice gift shop, that also serves food. We had the chicken, bacon ranch sandwich and a cup of clam chowder. Both really good and extremely filling. The sandwich was large. We should have split it.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 11, 2024

We did a lighthouse tour and while the information was interesting, the Covid precautions fell very short. The guide did not have a mask on when we entered the small museum. I asked if he was going to wear it, a bandanna around his neck, and another person quickly volunteered that it was required inside (where we were) but not outside. He did not put it on. We went outside and were then joined by three other people, a single and a couple. When we entered the lighthouse, which is very small, there was no attempt at social distancing although we tried to hang back in order to stay away from the four other people. At a minimum, they need to limit the groups to people in the same party or ask folks if they are comfortable going inside where social distancing is nearly impossible.

Worth the time! We paid our $8 each and took a self tour of the museum (2 floors) and got a guided tour of the lighthouse. Our tour guide, Mike, was very personable and knowledgeable! We learned so much. The gift shop has many interesting items.

I was here a couple of years ago but didn't have time to see it all. This place is so interesting that I had to come back to catch up. I found a new gift shop in the process of opening, and I will say again that I feel this is the best gift shop on the coast. It is full of nice, interesting things. Not your typical "made in China" trinkets. Wonderful selection of art, books, local food items, interesting crafts, etc. I dare you to walk in there without buying something, even if it is just a bag of sugar free salt water taffy. The museum is interesting and among other things has Coast Guard living quarters and equipment from several different eras. Neat to see the changes over the years. Just be sure to take the light house tour, what a fascinating piece of equipment.

My guide was incredibly knowledgeable and this is one of VERY FEW lighthouses where you can actually get up into the light enough to see the lens. This may change, so don't wait to visit. It;s also worth visiting the museum, and the gift shop is a very good source of nautically themed gifts.

I love lighthouses and history, and this place has tons of both! There is the century old lighthouse, a Coast Guard museum, and a an extensive gift store. They also sold sandwiches in the store, but we didn't know and came prepared with a picnic lunch. There is a docent who gives group tours of the lighthouse, why it was needed, how it was built, the whole nine yards! The Fresnel lens (used in the light) discussion was excellent. We then had a picnic lunch on a bluff looking out at the mouth of the Umpqua River where it empties into the Pacific Ocean. Then we went thru the Coast Guard museum showing the early attempts at saving lives of shipwrecked sailors and how the Coast Guard now performs that function.

This scenic property is well cared for with a museum, gift shop/cafe in the old boat house and the lighthouse near by. (There is also some drab housing for current coast guards.) We checked out the gift shop with its nice variety and enjoyed the museum with coast guard memorabilia and lighthouse information. The highlight was the trip up the lighthouse to see the red/white glass that does the job. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and in about an hour you get a sense of the history of the area and the function of lighthouses in general. It was a clear day and the views were lovely too. What a treat!

The staff was incredibly rude and made unwarranted mocking remarks. They refused to give any valuable historical information. The people behind the counter at the museum told me I should use the women’s restroom because I have long hair.... (Yes, this happened in 2020)

I had the best time touring this lighthouse, and learning about the coast guard in the museum. It was worth the $8 admission and such a nice unexpected attraction when I came to see the beach and dunes. I would highly recommend a visit.

Excellent tour of Umqua River Lighthouse and museum by the HANDSOME AND KNOWLEDGEABLE tour guide from Idaho. Learned about the construction of the lighthouse and the lives of the coast guard and army people who served on the lighthouse land. Well worth the $8 per adult and $4 per child price. Both the adults and the kids (11 years old) enjoyed the tour.

There is no set schedule for tours. They are done by volunteers working at the lighthouse. Just ask one of them and they will put in a tour group.
