We luckily found this place accidentally on our way from Corvallis to Newport. We actually stopped for a farmers market and were told about the railroad museum. It was an incredible 2 hours of learning about the railroading history of the Pacific Northwest. Tom, (I believe that was his name) had an incredible knowledge of every piece of equipment and also had the stories to go with them. It was interesting to see the before and afters of the equipment they had restored.
We were there on a weekday, so some of the special events that they do were not going on, so we got a lot of undivided attention. If you have any time to stop by and talk to the guys who work and volunteer there, I highly recommend it.

Toledo is a small community located at the western end of the former Southern Pacific Railroad. As the western terminus it has a rich history of both passenger and freight rail activities as well as that of the logging railroads into the woods. The museum hosts a 1922 Baldwin steam locomotive, a 1951 45 ton switching locomotive, the oldest restored wooden caboose in the Pacific Northwest and one of the few remaining restored Railway Post Office/baggage cars. It has restored and operating gasoline powered motor cars. The museum offers a vast library of books, videos and photographs for researchers and interested visitors. DOcents are well prepared to guide your visit and answer your questions. Admission is without charge.

The President of the YPRHS gave us a fabulous tour, complete with little known facts about the area and the railroad. Fascinating history lesson. Don’t miss this!
