Northern Oregon Coast Day Trip

17 reviews
This day trip is a customized tour along a section of rugged coastline along Oregon's northern coast. There will be one or two town stops, and multiple stops at headlands and beaches. After your pickup in Portland, we'll discuss the interests of people in the group, and your guide will customize the itinerary to those interests. Regardless of interests, the trip will include driving the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway with a short hike through oldgrowth Sitka spruce forest, beach time, tide pools, sea stacks, viewpoint stops, and a lunch stop in a charming coastal town. If group interest allows, stops with a more technological history focus may be made, such as the Tillamook Air Museum, Tillamook Creamery (currently closed due to COVID-19), or Camp 18.

- Please be prepared for whatever the weather may be when your tour runs
(e.g. rain gear, sunglasses, hat, extra layers, sunscreen).
- Wear shoes that you don't mind getting sandy and wet.

We stopped-in shortly after opening on a Saturday. The staff was doing a great job with COVID-19 and were taking the safety stuff super-seriously. Tables on the outdoor patio were already full, but there were a (very) small number of indoor tables; with the open windows on a nice day and ample distancing inside, we felt comfortable taking one. Staff were helpful and attentive, although they seemed less interested in really talking you through the beers than perhaps I expected. There were a handful of beers on draft and a few more available by the bottle. Some you could enjoy only at the brewery; others were available only for take-away. The tasting room was small and simple...a boutique operation for sure. Definitely a beer geek’s paradise, especially if you’re into funky wild ales. Not your standard beers! The place seemed to have cult status for the beer-geek crowd, which was cool to see. The beers were indeed super-interesting in their flavor profile. We tried 6 oz pours of three; one had very cool notes of spruce, one had awesome peach notes; one, made in wine barrels, wasn’t a favorite but won points for originality. I’ve had better beers elsewhere (much of that is a matter of taste, admittedly), but give De Garde major points for originality. Overall, a fun stop.

They were closed on the day we were heading to Tillamook but website said we could email for an appt. I did this and emailed my order, which was bagged and friendly. Lindsey was nice and helpful. Would love to stop back when we could drink inside.

The natural free yeast in there beers give them a nice funky sour flavor. Definitely worth a try! They also have some rotating taps for those that arnt brave enough or want something more traditional.

This Tillamook brewery has risen to cult status brewing world class ales in numbers sufficiently small that it has achieved cult status and it's bottles are desired literally all over the world. Visiting the tasting room itself provides a challenge in that it's open for only very limited hours each week as visitors from all around make it a destination stop with hopes of tasting some of the best wild ales America has to offer and leaving with cherished bottles which have limited availability. The brewer is an artist; the owner (his wife) is a bit idiosyncratic but the bottom line is that first class beer is produced!
