great picnic area and museum to enjoy on its self guided tour
Oct 2019
I found this little grain mill/museum on a trip on a side road while traveling hwy 5 and decided to follow hwy. 99 and decided to make a stop. there is a small flock of farm ducks and chickens in the yard of the old mill owners house which you can feed for a quarter from the vending machine. The self guided tour was full of all sorts of machinery used in this old grist mill but, nothing here operates. The mill has a musty old smell that goes along with an old grain mill on the river. inside are original belts, pulleys, old timbers and equipment used to grind grains that were harvested in the area. a 2 to 3 hour time frame for a visit here is recommended for this state park.

Outstanding

Guided tour was wonderfully informative. Guide will operate the water driven turbine for you. Working displays of grain elevators, grist mill stones, and other equipment. This site is a work in progress but the staff and volunteers are doing a terrific job restoring the site. Very good for both adults and children. No fee to enter, but donations are accepted. Feed the chickens and ducks. :-) I was just passing by but am so thankful I stopped. Very quiet and peaceful on a Monday.

A tribute to Oregon ingenuity

This past summer, we visited the Thompson Mill Historic Site in Shedd. It was totally awesome! Docent volunteers give tours and explain the changes in the mill over time and how people have adapted it Wow, we were so impressed and took our family from Maine to tour it in April. They LOVED it as much as we did. It's a terrific place to take your family, kids, teens and adults. The Tour guides have different specialties so be sure to ask if you have questions; they have been eager to answer and demonstrate, and clearly they take pride in being there. AND best of all, the guides turn on the mechnaisms for a few mimnutes so you can actually see how it all works. I highly recommend this place!

The guides at this tour were great. It would be an especially good tour for children... so much history.

Worth the Drive!

We found this place by chance searching our GPS and we are so glad we drove out to see it. The tour guide was great and answered all our questions and showed us how things worked. It was a true glimpse into what life at a mill would have been like. 100% recommend a visit!

Great Tour from Barb at the Mill
Oct 2017 • Family
We showed up not expecting much but a self guided tour. Barb already had started a tour and invited us to join in. Our 8 year old son was thrust into the workings of some of the equipment which he was reluctant to do, but Barb kept everything fun while still informative, and he felt at easy turning handles and pulling belts by the end. This place is a true gem in the middle of Oregon. A plus was feeding the chickens, rooster and ducks. Bring quarters and ring the bell!

A Hidden Gem
Sep 2017 • Couples
We just spent a wonderful day here. Barb was our tour guide and she was awesome. We've lived in Oregon all of our lives and didn't know about this mill nor the history surrounding it. It was great to hear about how the mill operated and to see it in action.
Our friends had car trouble and Steve was a real help in getting the car back on the road.
Thanks for a great day.

Barb is a wonderful guide!

Wife & I first visited about a year ago when the waterway was blocked for repairs, but it looked like a cool place and so we planned to return someday. Well, someday was today and we were the only visitors during noon time. We planned on a self guided tour, but ran into Barb with the State Park. She took the time to give us a personal tour of the entire facility with all the historical details. She had one of the other rangers turn on the turbine and we saw the machinery in motion. Barb is knowledgeable and personable. It felt like it should have been a paid tour, but it was...free! What a great little detour from the main highways, and well worth the time and drive.
