Sweet walkway along a pretty creek that runs through campus, very bucolic. Nice art museum across street from main campus, State Capitol right across the street and Bush park 2 blocks away, plus Amtrak station 1 block from campus.

This is not a part of the Oregon State Public University system. Willamette University is in the heart of Downtown Salem, just across the street from the beautiful, infamous Oregon State Capitol Building and it's grounds. As a note of interest, a son of well...More

We just got back from doing a round of college tours. The staff at this university were very friendly and knowledgeable. With this tour we saw the whole campus including a dorm room. Definitely a small school with about 2,000 undergrad students. Beautiful campus.

This campus, is covered in old growth Trees, and lush lawns. Centered right in the heart of downtown...makes its convenient for students everything within walking distances. Beautiful to stroll and admire the old buildings as well.

I worked in the Springer Memorial garden when I attended graduate school at the University, way way back in the 1990s!! I remember with great fondness the various gardens and the work the staff put in to make it both a learning and beautiful experience....More

I had the pleasure of being toured around the university and it was magical. There was wildlife roaming around, nutria(?), big gopher looking creatures, birds, etc. Truly a gem of place in Salem.

Stay in Eugene or Salem mid-March? (1 Reply)
I am going to visit Univ of Oregon and Willamette University over a Friday and Saturday mid- March with my adventurous husband and 12 year old son. In between campus tours, I'd like to hike and check out downtown areas of both. Where should I sleep? Which is more fun/picturesque/unique to this area? Eugene or Salem? Also would appreciate non-stuffy lodging recommendations. Thanks! Lisa from Santa Cruz, California

Eugene offers miles and miles of nearby hiking/biking trails. As for lodging, a lot depends on whether you are wanting to get a feel for campus life or not. The Valley River Inn is fairly upscale and is the only lodging offering river view rooms (overlooking the Willamette). They're more expensive than those rooms overlooking Valley River Mall parking lots. Lots of shopping/dining close by. Right outside riverside doors is the bike path that goes for miles in both directions along the river,...More

what to see/do in Salem while checking out Willamette Univ? (4 Replies)
I will be visiting Salem this Friday to check out Willamette University with my H.S. Senior daughter. What should we see/explore in Salem in addition to the university to give her a feel for the town? Is there a shopping/restaurant area close to campus that the students frequent. Thanks!

Downtown Salem within walking distance of campus maybe 4 blocks. Also small businees area just east of campus And assume you know Oregon Capitol grounds are right next to campus, to north. Have you considered Linfield in McMinnville?

Driving time from Portland Downtown to Salem, OR (2 Replies)
We're getting ready to make some college visits with our high-school age son, and I'm trying to simplify things and stay in one hotel. We have an appointment with an admissions counselor at Willamette University in Salem at 9:00 a.m. on a weekday morning. Can anyone give me an idea of the approximate drive time from downtown Portland to Salem, allowing for morning traffic? Thanks!

Because this is a very important meeting, I would allow 1.5 hrs. That will give you time find Willamette U and hopefully enough time to enjoy a morning walk around Bush Park. BTW, "normal" drive time is under 1 hour.
