Abacela is a world-class, multi-award winning winery and viticulture...

Abacela is a world-class, multi-award winning winery and viticulture success story. 21 years ago when founders Earl and Hilda Jones planted its first vines they had no way of knowing what the outcome would be. They were scientists with zero winemaking experience who left secure careers and trekked 2700 miles west, kids in tow, to test a hypothesis. Abacela was an experiment they hoped would answer a question that had puzzled them for years: Why doesn't America produce any fine varietal Tempranillo wine? Earl and Hilda probably weren't the first enophiles to wonder why the great grape of Spain's famous Rioja wines was mysteriously absent from American fine wine. However they were the first to approach the question with scientific rigor, form a hypothesis and then devote their lives to testing it. Abacela is the result of one ordinary family's curiosity and determination that transformed their lives, built one of Oregon's best-loved wineries and influenced winegrowing not only in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, but across America.

After seeing all the TripAdvisor reviews, we decided to come here for a tasting a picnic on our way to Portland We did not have a day for tasting and sampling. We had a very good experience. We like Spanish wines, and it was interesting to visit a U.S. winery focused on Spanish old world grapes. As the winery had... More

Abecela doesn't want to compete with the famous makers of Cab, Pinot or even Chardonnay. It loves grapes on the fringes of respectability, especially Rhone and Spanish varietals. Not your favs? If you're driving north on I-5 don't fail to go 5 miles off the interstate to this lovely location in the vineyards. Order the antipasto plate, which is more... More

We went to three wineries to sample the variety of wines near Roseburg. Abacela was clearly the nicest and classiest of the three. The grounds were impeccably groomed. The interior was large and beautifully decorated. The two servers were knowledgeable in the types of wines they were serving. They also serve lunch. There is a charge to sample four different... This is my favorite Umpqua Valley winery. We ordered a cheese and meat tray to go with our tasting, and enjoyed the rooftop table with a gorgeous view. It's ok to bring your own picnic, and you can order the wine of your choice by the glass. A fabulous stop with excellent, knowledgable hosts.

There are many great wineries in the Umpqua Valley producing world class wine. The number of them is growing fast and they are getting better every day. In my opinion, Abacela is the best of them all.

I don't drink but had out of town relatives visiting, so we went to a few wineries in the Umpqua Valley. Abecela has a stunning setting and beautiful building. Wonderful atmosphere made us feel pampered. The gal who was pouring was very knowledgeable about the wines and freely gave advice and information. My family had a really nice time and... More

The Abacela Winery is worth a visit whether you're a local or just passing through the area. The tasting room is light and airy with great views of the vineyard and valley below. The interior is capable of accommodating larger groups both indoors (at the bar and longer banquet-length tables) and outside on their deck or patio. There are cheese... More

Abacela Winery is located in a lovely setting, making for a great place to enjoy award winning wines paired with a variety of fresh tapas. There are frequent special meals featuring their wines. A favorites of locals and well worth the stop when traveling through Douglas County.

There's a map in the tasting room that shows the location of the vineyard is the same latitude as the wine region in Spain. That equates to great Tempranillo! We like both the Fiesta and the 2012 they offered and took a bottle of each home. We weren't big fans of their other wines, including the Albarino. Lovely location. We... More

This is just the most charming vineyard; situated on a hill over looking a vista of finely manicured grape fields. Inside there are comfy chairs, some around a fireplace. The staff is super nice and educated. Get some wine and a cheese plate and go upstairs to the pleasing deck and enjoy. Plan to stay at least an hour here.... More
