Must see the ancient tree
Sep 2021
We loved it out there. We visited twice during our stay at the coast. The board walk is new (unlike the one pictured) and less than a mile long (round trip). The huge, ancient cedar tree waiting for you at the end of the board walk looks like something out of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings novels. It is so huge and bizarre that you have to see it for yourself -- words cannot describe it. There is no sign indicating that the boardwalk trail starts at a small parking lot right off Hwy 101. Only a circular sign greeting you to Rockaway Beach stands next to the road (east side) at the parking entrance, and it only faces south.

Wonderful walk through woods to a magnificent tree at the end. Well maintained boardwalk. We saw an osprey nest with a bird in it.

If you're in need of a zen-like experience, don't pass this place up. My friend and I had heard of this walk in the woods so on a recent visit you Rockaway Beach we made sure to go. The walk itself is easy, its all boardwalk and above the forest floor. There are old growth trees stripped of life along with robust cedars and skunk cabbage on the forest floor. Its serene, birds fly overhead and you can still hear the ocean pounding the shore. The reason for the walk, the hundreds of years old huge cedar is at the end. Its stately and worth the walk to the end. Enjoy!

Loved the big cedar tree!
Feb 2021
I have four kids, 11 to 3, and this hike was a nice quick outing in Rockaway. There is boardwalk in great shape all the way to the tree. The boardwalk is a bit slippery in places. There is a short return trail in the mud, but be sure to wear your boots! Tennis shoes will get get soaked. And the tree was amazing!!

New boardwalk, easy and beautiful walk in the woods
Jun 2020
New, level, beautiful boardwalk path all the way to the big cedar tree. Also a branch of the boardwalk ends at a podium with benches and a picnic table. There are still some off-boardwalk segments of trail, which can be VERY muddy. But no need to leave the boardwalk path. Much better adventure than we expected.

Ancient cedar tree
May 2019
This well maintained preserve begins with a 1/4 mile boardwalk though a woods/march. There is a trail (rather muddy) that leads to an old growth cedar tree 49' in circumference. Quite a sight!

Beautiful nature trail with huge old cedar tree
Apr 2019 • Couples
From new parking lot on Hwy 101 at the Rockaway Beach sign, take a beautiful 1/4 mile nature walk on a new boardwalk through a forested skunk cabbage wetland. From near the end of the boardwalk, take the hiking trail through the forest another 1/4 mile to a huge old cedar tree. Well worth the visit.

Not much to see
Jan 2019 • Couples
I guess the huge tree is one of those that have fallen over? Nice stroll through wet-lands but not much to see. Expected more wildlife
